Elemental Health and Nutrition

Elemental Health and Nutrition Functional Medicine aims to find the root cause of illness by looking deeper into a persons biochemi When this balance becomes disrupted, illness can occur.

Every aspect of your body, even your DNA, is composed of an abundance of vitamins and minerals, which exist in perfect harmony. Nutritional medicine aims to bring the body back into equilibrium through dietary and lifestyle changes, and focused supplementation. A nutritional consultation involves taking a thorough case history, analyzing your diet, and taking lifestyle factors and day-to-day stressors into consideration. This holistic approach helps to get to the true root of your issue, and not simply treat your symptom. The following conditions are among those that can benefit from a nutritional consult.

- Constant stress
- Poor sleep
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Anxiety or depression
- Learning difficulties
- High histamine
- Methylation issues
- Poor weight management
- Digestive issues
- Cardiovascular issues

I also have a strong interest in mental health issues, methylation and genetic polymorphisms, which can benefit from targeted functional testing and precise supplementation.

You know that feeling when you blame the innocent broccoli for your distress? Stop it! 🥦 In my experience, the problem isn't the vegetable; it's the environment in your gut.

If you have low stomach acid or a bacterial imbalance, your system is basically running an inefficient compost heap. That leads to gas, bloating, and the desperate desire to wear nothing but sweatpants.

Let's stop just masking the symptoms and figure out why the gas is being produced in the first place.

I spend a lot of time helping clients find the root cause of chronic, unexplained symptoms—and I can tell you, the culprit is often something they can't even see: mycotoxins.

These toxins are produced by mould and can easily sneak into your body. They're not just an indoor air problem; you can inhale them, ingest them (through contaminated food or coffee), or absorb them through your skin. Once they're in, they can silently trigger severe, systemic health issues like chronic fatigue, brain fog, and autoimmune flares.

Some people can be very sensitive! Recently I had a patient react to an office computer which pulled mould spores into the computer casing. Mould is microscopic. If you can’t see it, it doesn't mean it’s not there.

You know, when it comes to your thyroid, iodine is truly the Goldilocks of nutrients. It's not about "more is better" or "less is best" – it's about finding that sweet spot of "just right." And trust me, getting it just right is absolutely vital for a happy, healthy thyroid!

I often see people who are either avoiding iodine, or enthusiastically loading up on it, thinking they're doing their thyroid a favor. It's like Goldilocks trying porridge that's too hot or too cold – neither is quite right! 🤦‍♀️

So, how do you find your "just right" iodine intake? I look at all your sources: supplements, medications, those sneaky personal care products, and, of course, your diet and salt.

Here's my quick guide:

✔️ On thyroid meds? This doesn't mean you're getting enough. Often i see people need more.

✔️ Have thyroid disease (Hashimoto's, Hypothyroidism, Graves) but not on meds? Go slow!!! Too mcuh iodine will make it worse.

✔️ No thyroid disease? 50-200 mcg is generally safest, but often by reviewing bloods regularly we can often tweak it further.

It can feel a bit like a balancing act, but getting iodine right can make a huge difference in how your thyroid functions.

Did you know you have a "second heart" working hard for you every day? It is not an actual heart, but a crucial pump built into your calf muscles.

Think about it: your heart sends blood down to your legs, fighting gravity. It is the job of your calf muscles to push that blood back up to your heart. This is called the venous pump or peripheral heart.

When you walk, run, or even just flex your ankle, those calf muscles squeeze the deep veins in your legs, essentially acting as a booster pump for your circulation.

Why this matters for your health:

✔️ Circulation: Keeping those calves active is vital for healthy blood flow throughout your entire body.

✔️ Prevention: Inactivity allows blood to pool, significantly increasing the risk of blood clots. If you sit for long periods, this pump is not working.

If you have a desk job, set an alarm every hour to stand up and walk around. Do some calf raises while waiting for your kettle to boil. Your "second heart" will thank you!

I love making connections for clients. Each person has a unique puzzle that needs to be solved 🧩 Most people who see me probably think I'm a bit wacko in the way I jump from seemingly unrelated question to the next!

From "Do you have an itchy bum?" to "Do you have any pets?" 🐾
From "Do you respond badly to coffee?" to "Were you jaundiced when you were born?"
From "Are your hands shaky?" to "Do you have dense breast tissue?"

But they all make sense to me. Each question is a data point to either close or open an idea or theory 🧠

It's a fun ride for most people that come and see me, but perhaps I need a "Not actually wacko" sign on my desk just to put new patients at ease 😅

Do you have gas that smells like rotten eggs? 💨 You'd be surprised how many people say "Yes" when I ask this.

Generally the next question is "Do you take NAC, use protein powders, or eat lots of fish or eggs?" 🥚🐟

If I hear another "Yes" then it's pretty obvious the person has lots of hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria in the gut.

The solution? Drop the cysteine foods and supps, and increase FOS containing foods, like artichoke, broccoli stalks, red onion, watermelon, mushrooms, and Ryvita biscuits 🥦🧅🍄
These high FOS foods help to balance the microbiome so it's a little less "on the nose" 👃

If you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's, sluggish bile flow may be sabotaging your healing journey. Why? It's a two-way street:

✅Thyroid to Bile: Low thyroid hormone slows down the contraction of your gallbladder, leading to bile stasis and making you more prone to gallstones and sludge.

✅Bile to Thyroid: Your liver and gut bacteria need healthy bile flow to efficiently convert inactive T4 into active T3. Poor flow means poor conversion.

You can't fix your thyroid without supporting your liver and bile. If you're tired, constipated, and still struggling even on thyroid meds, this is a clue!
