Katelyn Nicholson, Oceania Road Race Champion, 2024.
I was going to post up a whole bunch of photos of our testing and bike fit sessions, or the Thursday night TT’s dialling in TT position… but instead I’ve added a much more fitting photo. One screenshot of Katelyn’s Strava from a month ago which I thinks summarises her drive, her hunger for success, and her willingness to do what many others won’t.
It’s 4am, alarm goes off, rain is belting down, she has a 2hrs session to get done on TrainingPeaks. She puts the lights on, rugs up, and heads out into the rain. Like clockwork, the session is completed and she gets on with the rest of her day.
A couple of weeks into coaching Katelyn, I planned a session that was hard, it was somewhat of a test, she didn’t compete it… I jokingly asked if I had broken her, and she replied, “No, you can’t break me”. She then started the session again in the afternoon and completed it.
We can aim to build watts, optimise metabolic pathways, focus on fuelling and recovery. We can collect data, dial in a program and have a great race strategy on the day, but success, particularly in endurance sports, is built on a foundation of consistency and determination to improve. That’s is what this result represents for me, an unwavering need to succeed, and a willingness to do the work!
Congratulations .nicholson the 2024 WE Road Race Champion.
