Our philosophy lens for this week ☯️

Abhyasa & Vairagya - the ancient art of training power without force.

As we take the reins as the rider, life begins to move through us - in each moment, navigating the pull towards either side.

“You are not your thoughts”

I remember the moment I first absorbed this quote. I was 17 years old and on a public bus, reading Micheal A.Singer’s “The Untethered Soul” - required reading for the yoga teacher training I was to embark on.

I took my eyes off the page and looked around.
All these strangers sitting quietly around me. Adelaide suburbia blurring by.
I could turn them off in that moment - those troublesome thoughts. And I could, therefore, adjust their content.

This is where a yoga practice contains so much potency.
It’s not a 6 week training program.
Nor is it “sit down and stop thinking”.

It’s a preparatory practice for the fluctuations of life.

As I applied this sutra into my movement practice, the ability to switch the ‘citta’ on and off became easier (slightly). Challenging movements became more accessible, all because I wasn’t fighting through my own internal bullsh*t.

Most interestingly - As I left class, this habit permeated into the rest of my day.

The ups and downs of life become less destabilising when we can comfortably sit in the eye of our storms.
