In a recent episode on the about negative self talk, Mel asks award-winning Psychologist, Professor and best selling Author Dr if there’s a magic wand each of us can wave to silence our negative self-talk?

He replies, “There isn’t.”

Mel’s first reaction is the one many of us have: we don’t like that answer, suggesting that it would be amazing if there was be a quick fix.

Dr Kross reminds her that this is actually good news.

Every human life is distinct, so why would we expect ONE single tool to work for every single one of us? Rather, we can rely on MANY simple tools to manage the many different feelings, thoughts and behaviours we have each day.

This idea really stuck with us, as it’s exactly what we try to highlight in our work, including the Positive Taxonomy of Mental Health Map, where research shows us that there are 19 dimensions that inform our wellbeing, each uniquely impacting us, for every single one of us.

Our worlds are layered and unique, and the tools we work with should embrace that. In wellbeing, we often go searching for the one thing that will make us feel better, but the truth is that there are many tools and that’s the point. This should give us motivation to try out what works for us.

We highly recommend giving this episode a listen to learn more about our inner-critic and reset your mind for positive thinking.

About last week in Adelaide for our first Fruit For Thought Live series for the year!
We invited leaders across different sectors together to unpack the question: What does wellbeing that works (at work) really look like?

The takeaway message was clear: wellbeing that works isn’t about being endlessly positive or adding more initiatives, it’s about creating systems, leaders, and cultures that let people show up - as they are - and still thrive.

Thank you to Kate Mattsson from Westpac, Tom Woods-Kerruish from Department of Correctional Services South Australia and Ross Wait from 36ers for your invaluable sharing, as well as the Be Well Co SA team for joining in, as well as our host-with-the-most, our Head of Programs Tegan Davies. 👏

Every day, disability sector professionals pour their energy into supporting others’ wellbeing — but how often do we stop to ask: how mentally healthy are our workplaces themselves?

We’re proud to be teaming up with the South Australian Council on Intellectual Disability (SACID) to deliver a free professional development workshop for professionals working in the disability sector.

🗓 Monday 20th October, 9:30am–2:30pm (ACST)
📍 Parks Library – Community Room 1, Angle Park, SA

In this interactive session, we’ll explore what it truly means to create workplaces where people, staff and consumers alike, can function well and feel supported.

Together, we’ll unpack:
- The science of good workplace wellbeing
- Psychosocial hazards and how to address them
- How to foster psychological safety
- Supported decision-making and its role in wellbeing

With engaging discussions, reflection and real-world scenarios (plus morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea provided), you’ll leave with practical tools to create mentally healthier environments - for everyone.

This workshop is free for professionals in the disability sector, supported by an Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) grant via UniSA.

How do we know if we have something to change if we don’t have a name for it? Languishing usually flies under the radar, sometimes misunderstood as burnout or thought to be “not bad enough” to take action. The thing is, sitting in languishing can have real affects on your relationships, your quality of life and ultimately your risk of developing a mental illness down the track.

That’s why we have made it our mission to give languishing a name, a face, and a feeling we can all relate to. Recognising that to languish is a very real human experience, we can have a better overall understanding of mental health and live better lives.

🧠 What actually works to improve mental wellbeing?

With 40+ years of research and thousands of studies, we know more than enough to move the needle on languishing. But the evidence might surprise you… not everything you’d expect makes the “solidly proven” list.

We’ve broken down a brand-new evidence guide (commissioned by Beyond Blue) into a simple, practice-friendly resource—so you can see which wellbeing strategies are backed by science, which are promising, and which still need more proof.

👉 Curious where your go-to strategy lands? Check out the full breakdown in our latest Be Well Know-How on substack. (link in bio)
