Dr Anneliese Perkins

Dr Anneliese Perkins I am an Adelaide Obstetrician & Gynaecologist with special interests in Obstetrics and ultrasound.

I am excited to be focusing on my passions of Obstetrics and Ultrasound. My rooms are based out of the Ashford Medical Centre, only a few short steps from the Ashford Delivery Suites. I offer longer appointments and focus on engagement and communication. I am able to offer dating, reassurance and low risk growth scans in my rooms. I continue to offer Specialist ultrasound services at Adelaide Women's Imaging. My Background:
A Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, with special interests in Obstetrics and Ultrasound, I completed my medical degree at the University of Adelaide in 2002. Shortly thereafter, I moved to Brisbane where I worked at Mater Mothers Hospital while completing my specialist training at several hospitals throughout Queensland. Given an opportunity to broaden my experience further, I returned to Adelaide working in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Ultrasound at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, it was during this time I was awarded my Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Having a strong passion for this field of work, I am currently undertaking my Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound while continuing to provide Specialist Medical Ultrasound services at Adelaide Women’s Imaging. As a mum of two, I always strive to deliver the very best outcome for mother and baby.

Nobody really talks about what happens after the birth. So let’s.

PPH (postpartum haemorrhage) affects around 1 in 12 births. Recently, two of my patients experienced it — both low-risk, first babies, straightforward vaginal births. Both had a retained placenta. No warning flags.

Why does PPH happen? The 4 T’s:
🔴 Tone — uterus doesn’t contract (most common, ~70%)
🔴 Tissue — retained placenta or membranes
🔴 Trauma — tears or lacerations
🔴 Thrombin — clotting disorders

The single biggest thing we do to reduce your risk: active management of the third stage.
After your baby is born, you still need to deliver the placenta. Active management — a Syntocinon injection plus controlled cord traction — reduces major PPH risk by up to 60%. Physiological management (no injection, body does it alone) carries 3–4× the risk. This is worth discussing with your obstetrician before you’re in the room.

If PPH happens, we act fast: uterotonics, uterine massage, manual removal of retained placenta, and IV fluids or transfusion if needed. Caught early, it’s highly treatable.

Signs to know — and share with your support person:
🩸 Soaking more than one pad an hour or passing large clots
💫 Dizziness or faintness
💓 Racing heartbeat at rest
🌡️ Pale, clammy or suddenly unwell
Save this. Ask your obstetrician about your third stage plan before your due date.

There’s no single way to bring a baby into the world — only your way. 💛
Amanda brought little Eddie earthside via caesarean with such grace and strength. This beautiful moment was captured in hospital before they headed home — seeing this new family together, glowing and besotted, is everything.
Congratulations, Amanda and Michael. Eddie is so loved. 🌸

✨ Happy International Women’s Day

This year’s theme — — resonates deeply with me as an obstetrician and gynaecologist.

Every day I get to show up for women at the most profound moments of their lives: births, diagnoses, difficult conversations, and quiet victories.

That is the greatest give I know — and what I gain in return is immeasurable.

To every woman I’ve had the honour of caring for: thank you for trusting me with your health, your body, and your story. You are why I do this.

To my fellow women in medicine and health — keep going. The world gains every time you show up. 💜

👉 If there’s a women’s health question you’ve been putting off — this is your sign. My door is open.

✨ A little Adelaide sunshine and a whole lot of gratitude ✨

What a treat to have the incredible Dr Natalie Kiesey-Calding in Adelaide this week! Natalie was in town for an important collaboration with the Australian Preterm Birth Prevention Alliance — and we couldn’t let the visit pass without some quality catch-up time.

For those who don’t know, Natalie is so much more to me than a colleague. She’s my mentor, my role model, my friend — and the obstetrician who delivered my first child. 👶🏻 It was Natalie who first showed me just how deeply rewarding private obstetrics could be, and who inspired my passion for high-level obstetric ultrasound. So much of the care I offer my patients today traces back to her example.

Adelaide absolutely put on a show 🌞 — Fringe season magic in the air, golden weather, and great food. The perfect backdrop for reconnecting with someone who shaped the doctor (and mother) I am today.

Natalie, thank you for everything — then and now. So lucky to have you in my corner. 🤍

Wonderful to see mum Jessica, dad Alexander, daughter Mathilda, and baby boy Desmond at their postnatal visit! 💙
Both Mathilda and Desmond are rainbow babies, born after the devastating loss of baby Dominic. I’ve had the privilege of caring for Jessica through both rainbow pregnancies, and it’s been a journey that required significant support every step of the way.
Pregnancies after stillbirth are complex - they require not just obstetric care but wraparound support from multiple specialists. Jessica was surrounded by an incredible team throughout: our dedicated midwives, my colleagues at Glow, and other specialists who all played vital roles in getting to this happy outcome. It truly takes a village, and I’m grateful to work alongside such compassionate professionals.
Alexander, thank you for being there for your family. And to Jessica - I’m glad we could provide the care and support you needed to bring Mathilda and Desmond safely into the world.
Wishing you all the best as you settle into life with two little ones! 🌸
