Food allergies affect around 1 in 10 one-year-old children in Australia. Some allergic reactions are mild, but some can be severe and even life-threatening.
Food allergy testing is appropriate for children when they exhibit symptoms suggestive of a food allergy, regardless of age. Skin prick tests can be conducted but are generally not performed on infants under 6 months old. Common symptoms include skin rashes or hives, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the lips or throat, and wheezing or trouble breathing. If these symptoms persist or are severe, testing with a doctor's guidance is recommended.
Delayed reactions in children may look like eczema, mood changes, nutrient deficiencies, abnormal bowel movements, excessive gas, stomach pain, fatigue, vomiting, constipation, watery or foamy stools, mucous in stool,
NutriPATH offers various allergy tests for children, including IgE and IgG blood tests for both food and inhalant allergies, as well as ALCAT food and chemical intolerance testing. IgE tests are useful for identifying immediate allergic reactions, while IgG tests can help with delayed reactions. It's recommended that allergy testing for infants be performed after 18 months of age.
