Let's talk about Male Fertility
Male Fertility & Acupuncture
When it comes to fertility issues, the main patient treated in a Chinese Medicine clinic is women, as they want to improve fertility naturally. The less likely scenario is that the male comes along with his partner for acupuncture and Chinese medicine treatment as well. For some reason, men are often reluctant to seek help and don’t want to know if they are infertile. It might be difficult for a man to talk about this touchy subject or act upon it. I personally think they are more manly when they turn up with an attitude of getting better and being on board to do whatever it takes to create the family they want with their partner.
How Can I Help?
Infertility is a widespread issue. We are reaching statistics which show that almost 50% of infertility is due to the male partner and 50% the female. For about 30% of couples, the problem is in both partners. Therefore, the man contributes to infertility in around half of all cases. Therefore, for the best chance of having a baby, both sides must do their part. A study by Sherman, (2009) assessed the effect of acupuncture on the s***m quality of males suffering from subfertility related to s***m impairment. After 10 acupuncture treatments, results showed that the participants’ fertility index increased significantly following improvement in total functional s***m fraction, percentage of viability, total motile s***matozoa per ej*****te, and integrity of the axonema which occurred upon treatment. Therefore, patients exhibiting a low fertility potential due to reduced s***m activity may benefit from acupuncture treatments. In the hands of a highly trained practitioner, acupuncture is safe and effective, but I’ll make sure to explain any side effects possible for peace of mind.
