One for the Boys

πŸ“‰ Only 17% of men are both sufficiently active and meeting the muscle strengthening guidelines.

Despite the positive impact of exercise - Aussie men aren’t moving enough! This HAS TO change!

As part of Men’s Health Week 2022, we are sharing a range of free resources to support men to meet the physical activity guidelines and gain the variety of physical and mental health benefits of being active.

Check out the full range of resources, created by ESSA accredited exercise professionals, on the Exercise Right website ➑️

Good information for World cancer dayπŸ’ͺ

Good information for World cancer dayπŸ’ͺ

Today is

What does exercise have to do with cancer? Well, a lot actually. Here's why...

1️⃣ Research shows that being physically activity has been linked to a reduced risk of developing at least 13 types of cancer (including breast, colon, stomach and liver cancer).

2️⃣ Exercise can help those undergoing cancer treatment by reducing fatigue and the severity of treatment-related side effects.

3️⃣ Some studies have even shown that exercise during treatment can improve treatment outcomes and five year survival rates.

NOTE: Exercise both during and after cancer treatment should be prescribed by an allied health professional, like an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, who can appropriately manage training load and provided exercises that are safe and individualised.

Find something you love doing and train for it!πŸ’š

They're often used interchangeable, but let's be clear: exercise and physical activity are not the same thing!

Physical activity is any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscle that requires energy expenditure (like cleaning the house, gardening or folding the laundry).

Exercise is physical activity that is structured, planned and repetitive (like going to a yoga class, running or lifting weights).

BOTH exercise and physical activity are important for your health and well-being. Structured and unstructured physical activity BOTH reduce your risk of chronic disease. Remember, all movement counts!

How will you be active today?

Yep, me too

Yep, me too

Haven't been exercising as much as usual over the Christmas break. Don't beat yourself up!

Remember that any movement is better than none.

Try a gentle walk, some stretching, go for an easy bike ride or even try a game of backyard cricket with the family. Every little bit counts.

But most of all, enjoy this special time with family and friends.

Think humans are meant to slow down as we age? Well, think again.

A team of evolutionary biologists and biomedical researchers have laid out evolutionary and biomedical evidence showing that humans evolved to be relatively active in their later years.

The researchers say that physical activity later in life shifts energy away from processes that can compromise health and toward mechanisms in the body that extend it. This guards against chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers.

"It's a widespread idea in Western societies that as we get older, it's normal to slow down, do less, and retire," said Harvard evolutionary biologist, Daniel Lieberman, the paper's lead author. "Our message is the reverse: As we get older, it becomes even more important to stay physically active."
