What is pain management for persistent pain?

Pain management is an important part of overall health and wellness. It involves making lifestyle changes to reduce the intensity and duration of pain, as well as using exercise, physical activity, and other methods to manage pain.

Exercise can help release endorphins and serotonin which can reduce the sensation of pain while also increasing energy levels. Exercise and physical activity are methods you can add to your toolbox to aid in managing your pain. You may temporarily have an increase in pain but if it is tolerable pain then you can still challenge yourself within your limits. If it is intolerable pain, look at modifying or ceasing the activity, and coming back to it the next day.

Stress management is also important for reducing persistent pain as stress can increase inflammation in the body which can lead to increased pain. In my consults you will hear me discuss a bucket of water and petrol theory in relation to your pain which a lot of people find to be an easy way to understand their pain. Additionally, lifestyle changes such as getting adequate sleep, managing stress levels, and engaging in regular physical activity can help improve overall well-being while also helping to manage persistent pain.

How do we put this into practice?

Have you ever tracked your stress, sleep, and pain patterns alongside everyday activities? This is one of the simplest methods to get to know yourself and how your body reacts. It is a good stepping stone into managing that beast over your shoulder.

Children or adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder are known to have higher rates of heart and metabolic conditions, issues with motor learning and control, and can have poor quality of life.

It doesn't have to be this way. One strategy to improve these outcomes is through exercise, physical activity and engagement in sports.

What is an Exercise Physiologist?

Unfortunately, this is still a common question Exercise Physiologists get.

Accredited Clinical Exercise Physiologists specialise in clinical exercise interventions for people with a broad range of health issues. Those people may be at risk of developing, or have existing, medical conditions and injuries. The aims of exercise physiology interventions are to prevent or manage acute, sub- acute or chronic disease, disability or injury, and assist in restoring one’s optimal physical function, health or wellness. These interventions are exercise-based and include health and physical activity education, advice and support and lifestyle modification with a strong focus on achieving behavioural change.

Living with a Disability

I aim to empower each individual to improve their functional capacity and their quality of life. I am able to support any age under "Improved Health and Wellbeing" and 9 years or older under "Improved Activities of Daily Living Skills" through NDIS.

Exercise is a key element of health and well-being for all individuals, including those with disabilities. Physical activity and exercise can help individuals with disabilities to improve their physical strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and overall physical functioning. It can also help to improve their ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, bathing, and eating.

Physical activity such as sports or recreational activities provides an opportunity for engagement in physical activity for people with disabilities. Exercise guidelines should be tailored to the individual's abilities, type of activity, and level of physical activity.

Exercise modalities such as aerobic, strength training, balance training, flexibility training, and sport participation provide numerous benefits for people with disabilities.

I can help individuals with disabilities to specifically design a safe and effective exercise program that meets their individual needs. AEPs can also provide guidance on the type of activity, movement engagement strategies, sport participation options, and other strategies to promote physical activity in people with disabilities.

Referrals from your GP are required for Medicare, DVA, Worker's Compensation, and My Aged Care.
