W**d, Feed, Pets and Kids!
When our customer’s have problematic w**ds in their lawn or gardens, they often ask us, “which is the best w**d killer to use?”.
Some w**d killers, or herbicides, are “non-selective” and kill all living plants. Some w**d killers target specific troublesome w**ds. Some are deemed to be ‘pet friendly’.
If you have pets and they are outdoors and you use a herbicide, there is speculation as to when it is potentially safe to allow your pet onto a lawn that has been treated. Some say up to 24 hours; some say 48 hours…others suggest waiting up to 3 days and even up to 10 days! Available information seems to suggest that once the herbicide is dry it has been absorbed into the plant and poses a no threat to pets or children. Hmm…so when is it safe?!
There are also “w**d and feed” solutions which are a combination of herbicides and fertiliser and can be in either liquid or granular form, but regardless of which type you choose, both kill just the w**ds, and not regular, healthy grass, unless you apply too much.
Products such as ‘Scotts Turf Builder W**d & Feed 3’ indicates that they are safe for pets when it is used according to the product label. Instructions indicate that you want to make sure pets are not in the area while applying the product. Scotts indicate that once the treated areas dry completely, chewing or eating grass will not be harmful and your pet can resume normal activity within the area.
If you wish to avoid using herbicides all together, there are a couple of organic solutions.
The ‘Doctor Kirchner Natural W**d & Grass Killer’ is a pet-safe w**d killer made from ocean saltwater, vinegar, and soap. This non-selective w**d killer is perfect for use on driveway cracks, sidewalks and other hardscape features. The simple and natural ingredients make it pet-friendly as well as kid-friendly.
Another effective vinegar solution would be 4 litres of white vinegar, 1 cup of salt and 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid that works as an effective and safe week killer. Spray the mixture on offending w**ds to kill them without harming your dogs, kids or other pets. Further information is available here: https://www.k9ofmine.com/dog-safe-w**d-killers/ .
Just remember that almost all herbicides or w**d killers contain some form of POISON. What ever you use, read the label carefully and if you are unsure, ask for advice.
