Lipedema is a relatively new health condition. This is why many health professionals do not know very much (if at all) about it. This means many women suffer with Lipedema without understanding what it is or how to manage it.

The problem is when someone suffers with Lipedema they may have tried multiple 'diets' and exercise regimens with limited results. This can be very confusing for those with Lipedema because they are trying everything they can to manage their abnormal fat distribution, but nothings seems to change.

Even though there is minimal research about Lipedema, there are a few things that seem to be linked to Lipedema. Some contributing factors include changes in hormones (puberty, pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause), and inflammation.

Is there anything that women can do to help their Lipedema? The short answer is YES! The more complicated answer is that every woman with Lipedema is so different in their presentation, inflammatory responses, age (hormone stage), and other health impacts. That means the management has to be individualised.

I see women in my private practice, in Australia, to work through the nutrition and inflammation aspect of Lipedema.

Cooled cooked rice is just another way of adding resistant starch to your balanced dietary intake for gut health. Here are some more ideas to get resistant starch:

Resistant starch feeds the good bacteria that live in your bowel and supports healthy digestion.
The CSIRO recommends consuming around 20g of resistant starch a day to improve gut health and reduce the incidence of bowel cancer.

Here are a few food sources of resistant starch: slightly unripe bananas, legumes, rolled oats, barley and green peas!

Such an important part of Dietetics - identifying malnutrition, treating it, and improving quality of life (even saving lives!!!)

MEDIA: NDIS independent assessments forget that food fuels function

We’re calling for the government to immediately cease the roll out of the independent assessment program as part of its proposed reforms to the National Disability Insurance Scheme ( ), in a bid to prevent, avoidable nutrition-related deaths of vulnerable Australians.

Alarmingly, this new program would result in limited testing on food habits and nutrition status – a vital factor in function and overall wellbeing.

“Nutrition screening is an important step to help identify and provide support to those at risk of malnutrition. It’s also a life-saving measure to detect those at immediate risk of death, due to swallowing ability, to eat safely and reduce the incidence of choking.” - Kathryn Toohey, Accredited Practising Dietitian ( ) and Dietitians Australia’s Subject Matter Lead.
