“There were times I didn’t recognise myself… caring for my mum as she struggled with her mental health shaped me in ways I’m still discovering.”

After losing her mum to mental illness, Jenna made a commitment: to speak openly, to shine a light on stigma, and to help create safe spaces where people can talk honestly about their struggles which she is doing through our Mindplace mental health clinics.

On , her story is a reminder that the smallest check-in can mean the world. Asking “Are you okay?” is just the start, it’s about listening, showing up, and reminding each other we’re never truly alone.

Thirteen years ago, Tom asked his mate Shay “Are you okay?”.

From there a book club where blokes could read, laugh, debate, and most importantly, open up, was created.

Fast-forward to today, and Tough Guy Book Club is now a global community with 160+ chapters in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, meeting on the first Wednesday of every month.

The only rule? No work talk. Just honest chats about books, life, struggles, and wins.

We’re proud to back TGBC through the Bupa Foundation as they support mental support. It just shows, sometimes the best way to start a conversation is with a story.

Between nursing and front desk, Shey pretty much has eyes on everything that happens at Bupa Dental Fountain Gate — and she admits it’s not just because she’s “a little bit of a control freak.” It’s about being able to help patients in the best way possible. If she’s in the surgery, she can answer accounts questions on the spot, and if she’s at the desk, she can explain treatment plans with extra detail.

Most days she’s doing one role or the other, but she’s always ready to jump in wherever she’s needed. Front desk work is a bit of an unsung art form too — multitasking, keeping the practice running smoothly, and sometimes navigating tricky conversations, all while being the first point of contact for everyone.

Her favourite part of the day? The lunchtime debriefs with my colleagues who are more like my best friends. Favourite thing outside of work? Doing absolutely nothing (but Pilates, time with friends and family, and the occasional scroll on TikTok also make the cut).

Fuel for it all comes in the form of an iced or hot mocha with almond milk in the morning, and an English Breakfast tea in the afternoon — two teabags, two raw sugars, milk. Sweet, strong, stunning.

Leo, Head Chef at our Bellarine Lakes home, knows that cooking is about more than just following a recipe, it’s about serving up moments that matter.

“It’s a chance to enjoy something delicious, share a laugh, and feel connected,” he says.

From chilli garlic prawns to baked salmon, Leo loves plating up for the residents.

“The residents favourite meal I do is anything dessert related,” he says.

After years of pain, Katja Dedekind was diagnosed with endometriosis at just 17 years old.

At times, this condition was more difficult to manage than her vision impairment. She felt alone and isolated, with only her mum to talk to.

But now she is proud to share her story so that other women know they aren’t alone and that pain during your period isn’t always normal.

Katja is one of six Australian Paralympic Team para-athletes featured in our Health Stories campaign.

Spring is here but along with the sunshine and warmer days, it can also trigger asthma symptoms.

Bupa Clinical Director Dr Tony MacDermott says our doctors often see more people struggling with asthma at this time of year, even those who’ve never experienced symptoms before (think thunderstorm asthma).

💡 Tip: Book an asthma review with your GP if you have asthma or a family history of it.

And remember, services like Blua’s Online Doctor make it easier to get advice or a prescription without waiting for an in-person appointment.

Wear it Purple Day is more than a celebration, more than just wearing purple—it’s a commitment. A commitment to listen, to learn and to lead with pride and purpose.

It’s about showing the rainbow youth that there is hope, support and acceptance.

For Rhythm Gupta, an ally of our Pride Network and part of our Risk team, Wear It Purple Day is when we stand alongside our LGBTQIA+ community, today and every day to build a bright future together.

“Being an ally means listening, learning, and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Everyone deserves to feel safe and valued for who they are.”

Great to see Rhythm with the latest The Big Issue Australia, proudly supported by the Bupa Foundation, celebrating .
