A conversation could save a life

R U ok day

Got a feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. Learn more about the signs and when it's time to ask R U OK? By visiting the R U OK website https://www.ruok.org.au/

By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not OK, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are OK, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.

Another door opens 🏠

Through strong partnerships with community providers, we’ve supported someone who had experienced homelessness to move into a place they can call home, with wrap-around supports to help them thrive.

While we know many housing needs remain unmet, it’s important to pause and acknowledge these moments of progress. Stronger communities start with stable housing.

Last week our team completed de-escalation training. We are committed to providing quality services and keeping our staff and participants/service users safe. Here we have Aileen, Isabella, Amanda and Kyrra doing the Western Australian Association for Mental Health training.

This training enables our staff too:

✅ Understand the impact escalation has on the brain and body and how that affects behaviour and reasoning;
✅ have an increased knowledge of the escalation curve, stages and triggers;
Practiced skill development using the 3-step model for de-escalation; and
✅ Have an appreciation and recognition of escalation in self, and knowledge of strategies to self-regulate.

Support Coordinators play a key role in helping people access and maintain housing that meets their needs, within the scope of NDIS service delivery. This connection to housing options, liaison, advocacy and high level coordination skills all leads to a positive outcome for people living with disability.

Today Nicole met with Fiona at Advance Housing Ltd to receive the keys and agreements / welcome to your new home pack before meeting with our participant and support worker for the next stages.

We recognize that many are still on their journey towards secure housing and we hold space for all stories. Our hope is that this highlight and success story brings hope and joy and shows that progress is possible even when the path can be challenging

Our team are excited to meet with Palmerston and Pioneer Health next week.

Drug and alcohol counselling service Palmerston is taking healthcare to the streets with the launch of a new outreach service for the Great Southern.

The partnership with Pioneer Health will provide those experiencing homelessness with on-the-ground clinical care, harm reduction education, needle exchange, psychosocial support and food.

The project looks to overcome stigma, cost and transport challenges by meeting those in need where they are, rather than expecting them to come to the service.

"It's about supporting people who are homeless and reducing those barriers to healthcare, bringing healthcare to the person and not expecting the person to go to services," Great Southern regional manager Tina Edwards-Pope said.

"I'd like to see better healthcare for those doing it tough."

The government-funded service was made possible with support from Community Bank Albany which funded the purchase of the vehicle.
