Happy Territory Day from Jawoyn country, where Down Under Discoveries was born, and the place I put it too rest once and for all💙

Territory Day recognises the day the Northern Territory gained power, from the Commonwealth Government, to self-govern in 1978. Every year on 1 July, Territorians and visitors alike come together to officially celebrate everything we love about the amazing place so many get to call home🙏

These beautiful Rainbow Bee-eater (Merops ornatus) are in abundance up here currently and hang around my camp most afternoons. They are a common bird found across Australia, including within Jawoyn country. They inhabit open forests, woodlands, shrublands, and cleared areas, often near water. During the winter months, southern populations migrate north, while those in northern Australia remain year-round as long as the weather is warm🐦

When you wake up with clarity… decisions are made. 💭✨

Just want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has joined us on the Down Under Discoveries journey over the years. From unforgettable hikes to serene paddles, deep nature connections to shared stories under the stars — it’s been nothing short of magic. 🌿🚶‍♀️🚣‍♂️🌅

It’s been a true privilege to get you all out on Country, whether through our experiences or simply through inspiration. But the time has come, and the decision is final — we’re closing this beautiful chapter. 💚

This page will be wrapped up at the end of the week, so between now and then, I’d LOVE for you to share your fondest memory, photo, or moment from any of our adventures together. 📸🌏

Throughout the week, I’ll be posting a few of my own favourite memories too. Let’s celebrate all that we’ve experienced, together. 🥾💫

While it’s the end of one chapter, I’m actually really looking forward to seeing where this new road takes me. 🚐🌅✨

Much love and gratitude always,
Chelle 🤍

The best way to end a working week in the NT?
🌅 Mindil Beach Sunset Market, hands down!

If you’re visiting the Top End during the dry season, this is an absolute must-do! From April to October, the markets come alive with colour, culture, and cuisine 🎨🍜🌏

As you can see, it gets BUSY — everyone’s grabbing a bite then heading down to the beach to watch that iconic sunset dip below the horizon 🌞🌊
Nothing quite like it.✨

🌅 Northern Territory sunsets hit a little differently 🌄

Every evening feels like the sky puts on a private show — bold, fiery, and breathtaking. Grateful to be witnessing magic at the end of each day up here in The Top End ✨🧡

📡 Sorry for the radio silence. I've been in and out of signal up here in The Top End, making it tricky to jump on the socials. But I wanted to say a huge THANK YOU 🙏 to those who’ve checked in with kind words and support — it means a lot💚

I’m doing really well — actually, I've been quite busy! I’ve had the chance to work with the amazing local operator Gecko Canoeing and Trekking 🛶👣, helping with their Jatbula Trail transfers from Edith Falls back to Nitmiluk National Park, and today I even got to take their dream rig, the OKA, out for a spin! 🚐💨

This week we launched a group on a 3-day kayaking expeditions down the Katherine River, and it was such a joy to be part of it. Turns out my sudden availability (after pausing our tours) came at the perfect time — Gecko were short-staffed, and I was more than happy to lend a hand💪🏽✨

I’ve got a stunning little camping setup perched up on the escarpment — just a two-minute walk from the Katherine River (not swimmable 🚫🧍‍♀️🐊 due to the risk of meeting a fresh or saltie). BUT… there's a gorgeous little cascade tributary just one more minute away with a refreshing swimming hole, perfect for rinsing off after a big day💦🌿

And if that’s not enough, just down the road is the Katherine Hot Springs ♨️ — seriously lush — and the swimming pool at the Nitmiluk Campgrounds is another dreamy place to cool off! 🏞️🏊‍♀️

I’ll be based up here around Katherine and Nitmiluk for most of the next 10 weeks, soaking it all in 🌅🌌⛺️ and heading off on a few adventures over the weekends. Just need to sort myself out a mini Starlink to stay a little more connected — signal is patchy but the serenity sure isn’t😅🌐

Loving the warmth up here ☀️ — crisp mornings, balmy nights, and that incredible Territory sky... nothing quite like it💫

💚🧭🌙🌄✨🛶🦎🌿♨️

An Important Update from Chelle 💚

We know some of you have already noticed that there’s currently zero availability across all our products on the website. Can’t get anything past you guys, can we? 😉

So in the spirit of full transparency, I wanted to share where things are at.

It’s been a challenging few weeks, and truthfully, I’ve been trying to push through it, continuing on with product launches, planning, and holding it all together. But the truth is, with a few unexpected changes, my surgery, the delayed departure, and the eventual journey up to Darwin, things have started to feel overwhelming.

On top of that, a number of things have come up behind the scenes within the business, and together, it’s all led me to make the decision to pause everything for the next couple of months.

I’m not sure if this is a midlife crisis or just one of life’s gentle nudges, but I’ve felt a strong shift in my priorities. For now, I’m choosing to take a step back, something I’ve needed to do for a long time but have resisted in the name of duty, passion, and service.

I do want to apologise to those affected by the recent tour cancellations. I know how disappointing that must be, and I never make these decisions lightly. In fact, this one came with a lot of tears and moments of doubt. But at the end of the day, I have to honour my health and wellbeing, because I can’t pour from an empty cup.

For the time being, I’ll be working with another operator at the start of each week, and the rest of my time will be spent exploring, reflecting, and reconnecting with myself, something that’s been sorely neglected over the years.

I’m incredibly grateful for your understanding, support, and kindness as I navigate this chapter. I don’t have all the answers yet, and I’m not making any big decisions about the future of Down Under Discoveries. But I know this pause is necessary, and I trust that whatever unfolds from here will be right.

Thank you for walking this journey with me🌿

With heartfelt gratitude,
Chelle

We crossed the border late yesterday and have now settled into Darwin, ready to soak up the next 10 weeks of Dry Season vibes ☀️🌴
It’s a buzz up here this weekend with the Hidden Valley Supercars roaring into town 🏁🏎️ – such an exciting time to arrive!

I’m really looking forward to immersing myself in all The Top End has to offer – the culture, the nature, the sunsets... bring it on 🌅🐊🧡

Dave flys back to Perth tomorrow night, but will rejoin me towards the end of August for more adventures ahead 🚙✨

Over the next few days, I’ll share some highlights from our journey across WA to the NT – what a ride it’s been so far! Stay tuned 💫

🌾 Sculptures on the Marsh – Derby 🌾
We began our Kimberley adventure in Derby, a remote and character-filled town that holds deep cultural significance and connection to Country. Known for having the highest tides in Australia, Derby is also the western gateway to the Gibb River Road—and a perfect place to begin our journey.

Though our stop was short, we made time to explore the iconic Derby Jetty and wander through one of the town’s most moving highlights: Sculptures on the Marsh—an open-air gallery telling powerful stories of culture, connection, and community.

🖤 Stingray (JINUP) by Joey Kitching (2023)
Representing the stingray in the Nyikina language, this sculpture pays tribute to a traditional food source and the ancestral knowledge of coastal hunting.

🦀 Mud Crab (Nardungoo) by Valerie Lennard
Created by a Warrwa artist, this piece honours the practice of spearing mud crabs—a connection to Country, identity, and patience learned from the land.

🕊️ Brolgas by Mark Norval (2022)
A beautiful representation of the native companion bird, often seen flying across Derby’s wetlands in graceful formation.

🌕 Kimberley Moonrise Girl by Mark Norval (2021)
Celebrating Kirstene Jack, a local artist with roots in four language groups, this sculpture honours the strength and spirit of Kimberley women.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family by Mark Norval (2023)
A heartfelt reminder of the love, respect, and support we find in our families, and the strength that unity brings.

🐎 Kimberley Ringer by Mark Norval (2021)
Paying homage to Indigenous stockmen and their powerful bond with the Kimberley Brumbies, this piece reflects resilience amidst forced cultural shifts.

🏉 Outback Footballer by Mark Norval (2019)
Honouring the incredible legacy of Indigenous AFL players—including teams like the Barefoot Boys—this sculpture also nods to the region’s pearl diving past.

🔥 Contemplation by Mark Norval (2019)
A powerful moment captured before a Djunba ceremony, reflecting both the vulnerability and pride of young First Nations men carrying ancient traditions into a modern world.

After soaking in these incredible stories, we set off on the road again—heading toward Kununurra via a short section of the Gibb River Road, taking in the wonders of Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek. (More on that in the next post....bucket list items ticked off!)

We've made it to Kununurra, where we’ll spend the day exploring and slowing our pace to take in the beauty of this part of the Kimberley🌿

You know you’ve entered the Kimberley when the big, beautiful boab trees begin to dot the landscape 🌳✨ — or as they're known by Traditional Custodians, Larrkardiy. These ancient trees are truly awe-inspiring and, according to Indigenous lore, are imbued with powerful mystical forces. They’re scattered across the region like silent sentinels of time and Country.

We’ve just hit Derby, where our Kimberley adventures officially begin! 🧭 Although we've driven through this incredible region before, seasonal conditions meant we’ve never had the chance to properly stop and explore — until now.

One of our first stops: the Boab Prison Tree. A deeply significant site, it holds a dark colonial past yet continues to be a place of reflection and cultural importance. It’s a must-see if you're journeying through this part of WA.

We’ve got a few bucket-list pit stops ahead as we make our way toward Kununurra. The Bungle Bungles won’t be on this leg of the trip though — we’re saving that adventure for our return journey in September. Bring on the Kimberley magic! 💚🌿

We left Perth yesterday and have just hit Newman, passing by the Tropic of Capricorn 🌍, marking the entrance to the Pilbara! This part of the drive to the Northern Territory – Australia is one of my absolute favorites 😍. The first few days are a bit of a push up to the Broome turn off, and then we’ll slow things down to enjoy a little of the beauty of the Kimberley before heading into the NT 🌿. The roads have been nice and quiet, with plenty of wildlife to keep us company — kangaroos 🦘, cows 🐄, wedge-tailed eagles 🦅, hawks 🦅, and even echidnas 🦔!

On the road to adventure... 🚗💨
