Mothers, you are amazing!

Today we celebrate mothers who are here with us and for those who are no longer with us but always in our hearts

At Natural Wellness Albert Park, we have the privilege of caring for so many incredible mothers. We admire their devotion—not just to their families but also to nurturing their own well-being. These women wear many hats, balancing roles in the workplace, at home, and often as caregivers for ageing parents. Their ability to care for themselves so they can better care for their loved ones is truly inspiring.

Mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures—what unites them all? Is it their kindness? Their strength? Their resilience? Their unconditional love? Today, we honour the profound role they play in shaping our lives, our families, and our communities. They are the fabric of our civilisation, weaving love, care, and strength into everything they do.

In Chinese medicine, there’s a beautiful philosophy: “To treat a child, treat the mother first.” This timeless wisdom highlights the deep connection between a mother and her child. A mother’s health—both physical and emotional—can have a profound impact on her child’s overall well-being. Modern science echoes this, showing how a mother’s health during pregnancy and beyond, supports her child’s growth, immunity, and ability to thrive.

By prioritising self-care, mothers create a ripple effect that benefits everyone around them. Whether it’s through a moment of rest, a nourishing meal, or an acupuncture session that rejuvenates both mind and body, taking time to fill their own cup allows them to give so much more to their families and to everyone around them.

This Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate the amazing women who give so much of themselves. To all the incredible mums out there, thank you. You are the heart of our families and the foundation of our communities.

Happy Mother’s Day from the team at Natural Wellness Albert Park!

Cupping is a powerful therapy in Chinese Medicine. It works by releasing lactic acid and stagnation deep within the muscle layers and promotes healing and relaxation. By increasing circulation, it brings fresh, oxygenated blood to the area, accelerating tissue repair and recovery.

Beyond the physical benefits, cupping also addresses emotional well-being by helping to release pent-up emotions stored in tight muscles. This holistic approach not only alleviates physical discomfort but also supports emotional balance making it a valuable tool for overall health and wellness.

Why does perimenopause manifest so differently for every woman?
Some women experience hot flashes, mood swings, and joint pain. Others face night sweats, insomnia, brain fog, or palpitations, anxiety, and fatigue. Some just feel ‘BLAH’—lacking motivation and wishing for their ‘old self’ back.

Why is this transition so unique?
We all enter this stage with different pre-existing health conditions—like thyroid issues, endometriosis, high blood sugar, or low iron... Lifestyle factors also play a huge role: high caffeine, alcohol, sugar, poor diets, lack of sleep, insufficient exercise, and high stress levels.

And when we’re sleep-deprived, irritable, and exhausted, it can be hard to see what’s really going on. But here’s the good news: there’s a lot we can do to smooth symptoms and support our bodies during this time. Once through menopause, many women feel more energised, focused, and happier. It’s a time to honour yourself and embrace the next chapter.

Whether you’re taking MHT or not, there are simple steps you can take to feel better:
1️⃣ Increase protein, fibre, and water to support your metabolism and energy levels.
2️⃣ Build muscle—strength training is key to maintaining bone density, blood sugar regulation and metabolic health.
3️⃣ Release stress through journaling, meditation, yoga, or regular exercise etc

How can Chinese Medicine help?
Acupuncture and herbal medicine are powerful tools to balance hormones, regulate the nervous system, and reduce stress. They can also improve sleep, alleviate symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings, and help you feel more grounded and energised.

At Natural Wellness Albert Park, we take a holistic approach to your health. We consider your unique symptoms, genetics, health history, stress levels, and lifestyle to create a personalised treatment plan.

Perimenopause and menopause are not just challenges—they’re opportunities to reconnect with yourself and prioritise your well-being.

It’s nearly spring….our favourite season….cherry blossoms are in full splendour.

Spring signifies renewal. The start of a new chapter….It’s a great time to reflect and think about what you’d like more of in your life.

For Sandie it includes a bit of travel. Her children have finished school and are moving interstate and overseas to study.

The clinic will be closed from MONDAY 26th AUGUST and reopen on WEDNESDAY 25th SEPTEMBER.

Look forward to seeing you when we return!

I was recently invited to a fabulous, food-inspired event -  Gwinganna’s ‘The Art of Nourishing Cuisine‘, hosted by celebrity chef Luke Hines and joined by award-winning chef Sam Gowing alongside Gwinganna’s co-head chef Stephen Crawford.

Sam and Steve chopped and chatted, and ever so casually cooked up the most delicious fish laksa, a recipe inspired by the vegan laksa dish in Gwinganna’s latest cookbook - Gwinganna Gourmet. This dish was carefully chosen as an antidote to Melbourne’s cold winter weather - a way of warming up from the inside out.

Sam is all about ‘food as medicine’. She highlights the importance of eating foods in season - in winter more root vegetables, adding herbs and spices such as fresh ginger and turmeric (in the laksa) to promote peripheral blood circulation (to hands and feet) as well as ground spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, turmeric and ginger) for central digestive warming.

Steve and Sam discussed the versatility of cooking oils, with Sam particularly favouring macadamia oil for its nutty and sweet aroma. According to Sam, it enhances natural food flavours making it an essential ingredient for salad dressings, stir-fries, baking and pan frying. Macadamias are high in Omega-7 essential fatty acids, a monounsaturated fat that is heart-healthy and may help lower LDL cholesterol levels.

After the cooking demonstration, Sam and Luke teamed up as a light-hearted duo delivering invaluable health tips. They encouraged us to take one step at a time, to enjoy the process and reminded us that health is a journey.

To conclude the morning, Luke asked Sam if she had a favourite homecoming dish  …. one that you crave after being on the road for days or weeks at a time.  For Sam, it is a Japanese-inspired Macrobiotic brown rice and seaweed dish - https://www.foodhealthwealth.com/macrobiotic-brown-rice-and-seaweed/

Do you have a favourite food…. one that makes you breathe a sigh of relief?

Out of pain, back doing what you love!

When it comes to managing pain, there are several ways.

When it is acute and unbearable, strong drugs may be prescribed. This may be helpful to cope with the pain, but it’s not always practical. You might need to sit an exam, drive a car, catch a plane….. in these scenarios, you can’t afford to be drowsy, nauseous or fatigued from the medication.

So what can you do?

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to help manage pain. Doctors of Chinese medicine worked out that by targeting certain points on the body, pain may be reduced.

Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the release of endorphins which are natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body. It may also help reduce inflammation and improve blood flow which may contribute to pain relief without drowsy side effects.

Wishing you a happy Easter break. It’s a beautiful time of year here in Victoria. Nights are cool, days are often warm and sunny and there’s a stillness in the air unique to autumn. Traditionally, it’s a popular time to enjoy the outdoors with many people camping.

To navigate the festivities, we suggest making choices that support having fun whilst also staying healthy.

In Chinese medicine, the focus is on balance and harmony within the body. We suggest choosing quality and quantity. For example:

- Choose DARK chocolate (high cocoa content - 70% or higher). Dark chocolate contains antioxidants and is lower in sugar than milk chocolate.
- Stay well hydrated - herbal teas are a great way to do this and they can help the body detoxify.

It’s about now that we start making our favourite tea, Kick Start. It tastes fabulous, is good for you and is a welcome treat during the cooler months ahead.

The clinic will be open as usual - Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays  - during the school holidays.

One of the best ways to get the nutrients you need is to ‘eat the rainbow’. 🌈

It’s a simple yet healthy way to structure your meals and it’s an especially good way to get kids interested in food.

Ask your kids to choose a colour and prepare that vegetable ie peel carrots. They’re also more likely to eat it if they’ve prepared it themselves.

In Chinese medicine dietetics, the concept of “eating the rainbow” is similar to the idea in Western nutrition of consuming a variety of colourful foods to ensure that you’re getting a wide range of nutrients.

In Chinese medicine, different colors are associated with different elements and organs in the body. Nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining health and preventing illness.

For example:

🥬 🥦Green foods are associated with the Liver and Gallbladder, and may help with detoxification and promoting healthy digestion.

- 🍅🍒Red foods are associated with the Heart and Small Intestine and may nourish the blood and improve circulation.

- 🍋🥕Yellow and Orange foods are associated with the Spleen and Stomach and may support digestion and energy production.

- 🧄🍐White foods (flesh of fruit/vegetable) are associated with the Lungs and Large Intestine and may support the immune system and help with respiratory issues.

Please reach out if you’d like to know more.

The magic of autumn

As the seasons change our needs change too. It’s important to harmonise with seasonal changes to maintain optimal health. In Chinese Medicine each season has its own recommendations for nutrition (in autumn we suggest moistening and astringent foods e.g mushrooms), exercise and lifestyle practices (diaphragmatic breath work).
