Flat feet? High arches? Overpronation?

Foot pain is often blamed on foot posture, but the evidence suggests pressure distribution across the foot may matter more.

When certain areas of the foot take more load during walking or running, tissues like the plantar fascia and forefoot structures can become overloaded. Over time, this increased stress may contribute to conditions such as plantar heel pain or metatarsalgia.

Orthotics don’t “fix” your foot posture. Their role is to redistribute plantar pressure and reduce stress on irritated tissues, helping some people move more comfortably while the underlying issue settles.

A proper assessment helps determine whether pressure redistribution, footwear changes, strengthening or load management are the right tools for your situation.

Treat the person, not the scan.

Seeing a “disc bulge” on a scan can sound alarming but it’s often a normal finding.

Research looking at MRI scans of people with no back pain shows that many spinal changes appear in completely healthy individuals.
And this number increases steadily with age!

This is why imaging findings need to be interpreted carefully. A scan result does not automatically explain pain, and many structural changes are simply part of normal human variation.

For clinicians, this highlights an important principle:
treat the person, not the scan.

If you’re dealing with back pain, the most effective management usually focuses on movement, strength, and gradual return to activity.

Always speak with your physio or healthcare professional if you’re unsure about imaging findings.

PSA: Return to sport after an injury can be complicated…

Lindsey Vonn’s return was courageous.

It also highlights the risk tolerance conversation in sport medicine.

We know from longitudinal ACL data that premature return to knee-strenuous sport significantly increases re-injury risk. That’s why contemporary guidelines, including the Melbourne ACL Rehabilitation Guide (2022), advocate for criterion-based progression: effusion control, ROM restoration, strength ≥90% LSI, neuromuscular control, hop battery, and psychological readiness.

Return to sport is a risk decision.
The goal of rehab is to minimise that risk as much as possible.

“I can’t exercise because I have osteoporosis.”
We hear this a lot.

This 67-year-old woman had DEXA T-scores in the osteoporosis range and was told to avoid heavy lifting.
So she did and slowly stopped trusting her body.

What she actually needed wasn’t rest or restriction.
She needed education, reassurance, and the right kind of load.

Through supervised Exercise Physiology and our Osteoblast classes, she learned:
• what her T-scores really meant
• what movements were safe
• how to progressively load bone with confidence

The outcome?
She’s now lifting heavier weights, moving better, and no longer afraid of exercise.

🦴 Osteoporosis doesn’t mean “don’t lift.”
It means lift well, lift smart, and don’t do it alone.

General information only. Exercise should be individualised and supervised by a qualified professional.

Australian Open season is here! 🎾
But “tennis elbow” usually has very little to do with tennis.

It’s most often a load-related tendon issue caused by repetitive gripping and wrist use; at work, in the gym, or during everyday tasks.

The best approach isn’t complete rest.
It’s smart load management + progressive strengthening, sometimes supported by hands-on treatment to help you tolerate rehab.

If elbow pain has been lingering longer than it should, it’s worth getting it assessed!

Massage feels good - but there’s a reason why ⬇️

It can help reduce pain sensitivity, ease muscle tension, and calm the nervous system - which often makes movement feel easier and safer in the short term.

That’s why massage works best as part of a bigger plan.
Hands-on care can open the door… movement and rehab are what make the change stick.

Think of massage as the reset, not the whole solution.

Strength work is one of the biggest competitive advantages a runner can give themselves. 🏃‍♀️🏋️‍♂️

High-quality research shows that strength training:
• Improves running economy in distance runners (Balsalobre-Fernández et al. 2016; Blagrove et al. 2018)
• Reduces overuse injury risk when done consistently (Lauersen et al. 2014)

If you’re only logging kms, you’re missing half the equation.
Want help building a plan that actually supports your running? We can help.

Some snaps from our sports trainer and new grad physio strapping and taping course we ran on Saturday, a great turn out and an even better feedback from our attendees! We are delighted to be giving something back to our young Physio’s and sports trainers coming through the ranks. We are looking forward to building on this course and delivering it again later on in the year for those on our waiting list who missed out! 🙌

•This course is designed to make 3rd & 4th year physio students proficient at taping and feeling confident in a sports trainer role or team setting. ⛹️‍♀️

•Aimed at bridging the gaps seen in new grad and second year Physio’s in the application of various taping techniques for a number of pathologies that can be immediately implemented into treatment planning making new grad and young Physio’s more comfortable in the clinical setting.🧑‍⚕️

•Explaining and understanding the various types of tape, their applications, biomechanical considerations and clinical reasoning for and when applying it.👨‍🔬🤓
