Whether it's training for a marathon or trying to shed some kilos, we all know you have to put in the time and effort to get results. The mantras are everywhere: "Push Yourself", "No Pain No Gain", "Eat, Sleep, Gym, Repeat".
But what about rest and recovery? How are you supposed to 'make gains' by taking time off?
Rest days allow you to take stock of what's going on with your body after exercise and give your muscles a chance to recover.
Neglecting these important days can lead to injury which could sideline you for days, weeks or even months and could derail and undo all that effort you put in.
Listen to your body and look intoย different things that you can do during these rest and recovery days to help move the process along and come out ready to perform even better!ย

* Sleep - There's nothing better for your body and muscle recovery than a good night's sleep. Aim for eight hours and avoid the screen ๐ด
* Hydration - Water, water, water. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated both before, during and after exercise. Try to limit drinking things that dehydrate you (such as coffee and alcohol) during these rest days if you really want to boost your recovery ๐ง
* Stretching - A great way to help speed up muscle recovery between sessions, especially for those who sit for prolonged periods. Ask your trainer whatโs best for you ๐ง
* Massage - Like stretching, getting a massage following a sweat session or on a rest day can help speed up the recovery process. It deals directly with the muscles both to help loosen any tightness as well as getting fresh, oxygen-rich blood to the areas worked on which assists in and speeds up muscle repair ๐โโ๏ธ
* Diet - There's no point putting in the hard yards if you aren't going to follow through with proper nutrition. When your diet is lacking, your body will suffer - and so will your workouts ๐
* Supplements - Not always necessary but often a helpful tool in this fast-paced world we live in. Common supplements for muscle recovery are protein and magnesium ๐ช
