🌾 Life on the Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS) 🌾

Meet Dr Sujeeth Thiyagarajan (Echuca) and his supervisor Dr Anand Patel (Mildura) — a duo proving that distance doesn’t limit connection or learning. Through RVTS, they’ve built a strong 3-year professional partnership, even while working 400 km apart.

🩺 Why RVTS?

RVTS lets doctors train remotely while staying in one rural practice — ideal for those wanting stability and community connection. Registrars receive weekly online support, biannual workshops, and close mentorship from supervisors like Dr Patel.

🌄 Highlights:

Sujeeth swapped emergency medicine for general practice and found deeper patient relationships and a better work-life balance.

Anand says, “In rural medicine, you’re not just a number — you’re part of the community.”

Over 500 doctors have gained fellowship through RVTS with the RACGP or ACRRM.

💬 Takeaway:
RVTS empowers rural doctors to train, learn, and thrive — no matter the postcode.

🌾 Congratulations to Professor Marlene Drysdale! 🌾

We’re thrilled to celebrate Marlene’s recognition at the 2025 Rural Medicine Australia conference in Boorloo/Perth, where she received the ACRRM Distinguished Service Award — one of rural medicine’s highest honours.

Marlene has been a tireless advocate for First Nations health, cultural education, and reconciliation. She continues to make an incredible impact as an ongoing Cultural Educator with RVTS, guiding doctors across rural and remote Australia to deliver care that is culturally safe, respectful, and community-centred.

Through her leadership and mentorship, Marlene has inspired generations of health professionals to champion equity and understanding in their practice. ACRRM describes her contributions as extraordinary — and we couldn’t agree more. 💛

🎉 Congratulations Associate Professor Sue Harrison OAM! 🎉

We’re delighted to celebrate A/Prof Harrison — a passionate medical educator, Rural Generalist Anaesthetist, and long-serving Echuca doctor — who has been awarded the prestigious 2025 ACRRM–RDAA Peter Graham ‘Cohuna’ Award, the highest honour in Australian rural medicine. 🏆

For over 40 years, Sue has cared for the Echuca community, mentored hundreds of medical students, interns, and registrars, and made an extraordinary contribution to rural health education and advocacy across Australia.

Alongside her local clinical work, Sue is a current RVTS Supervisor and Board Member, continuing to support and inspire the next generation of rural doctors. Her leadership, advocacy, and mentorship — especially for women in rural medicine — have made her an enduring role model and champion for equitable healthcare access. 👩‍⚕️

Congratulations, Sue, on this richly deserved national recognition! 🌾💙

Dr Salma Hanif describes RVTS as an “exceptional platform for GP training” — a program that delivers the perfect balance of workshops, webinars, exam prep, and real support for doctors working in rural and remote communities.

With personalised guidance from her supervisor, medical educator and RTC, Salma was able to complete her fellowship with RACGP and pursue another with ACRRM — all while staying in her community and having her family included in the journey.

For her, RVTS isn’t just about clinical training — it’s about being supported every step of the way, professionally and personally.
