Pain flare ups can also be just that, a pain flare up.
They don’t always mean that you’re damaging something.
The best thing you can do is keep calm and keep moving. Movement is the key to life!

Pain with movement can be disheartening and downright annoying. Nobody wants pain when they move around.
But, moving through pain can be one of the best things you can do to help with your pain.
There are certain types of pain you can push though, and other you should listen to.
The best way to learn what is best for you body is consulting your health care practitioner and getting the right advice, specific to you and your health.

The old posture debate.
Over my career I’ve worked in practices that focus solely on posture and ones that assess it at a basic level.
What I’ve come to realise is posture is subjective, what works for one person might not work for another.
Pain in one posture might not produce pain for another in the same posture.

Posture is a window into the body, it allows us to see what is going on.
If you experience pain in a certain posture, it’s your body telling you something is going on, so listen to those cues and get it assessed.

Yes I said it, a weak core doesn’t cause back pain.
A weak core is a contributing factor to your back pain, but not the cause of it.
There will be something causing your body to have a weakness and that’s what needs to be addressed. Don’t get me wrong, strengthening your core is essential for spinal health, but can sometimes be a Band-Aid for a bigger problem.
Improvement in your core strength should be a part of your spinal care plan, not the only thing you do.

Back fact #2 - our spine doesn’t wear out from everyday loading and bending!
A very old train of thought is (similar to age) that the more we use our back, the more it wear out, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Quite the opposite in fact, the more we use it, the better it gets! Use it or lose it. *
*there is fine print with this statement - there can be some movements that when performed repetitively can cause issues, and these movements are those that are done without thought, without knowing your limits or repetitive movements where there is no balance or opposite movement.
But every day movement does not wear you out.
Sure there might be some every day movements that can cause pain or discomfort or even cause and injury but there is always a reason for this.
The body is constantly talking to you, telling you what it needs and what it doesn’t like - we just have to have both ears open and listen to it.
A great way to start learning how to listen to it is to look after yourself, get regular massage, chiro, osteo, acupuncture etc, to help tune you up, the better your body feels, the more it will talk to you telling you when things are beginning to cause a problem!

Getting older does not cause back pain.
Who would have thought huh.
But wait, don’t all old people have back pain??
Well yes, and no.
The ones who are sedentary - most likely.
The ones who are active and excessive regularly - most likely not. And if they do, it’s often temporary.
Age is a factor for pain, it doesn’t cause pain.
I’ve looked after plenty of 80+ year olds who move better than some 30 year olds. The “oldies” all had some things in common, the main thing they all attributed their health to was making sure they keep moving their body!

Huge congratulations to Mel on a decade in business! She is one of best (and favourite) massage therapists that I’ve worked with in my career!
I can’t recommend her more highly!

10 years ago today my little massage business was born. It’s been an amazing decade, both personally and professionally.
I had no idea what I was doing when i began, so I just kept working and learning and chipping away as I went along.
I still make mistakes and I’m still always endeavouring to learn more. Business has been massive personal growth for me. I’ve been lucky enough to meet some of the most fantastic, smart and interesting people along the way that really have helped me to become the person I am today.
It’s been such a pleasure seeing so many of you get your quality of life back and move on from pain and injury.
