What is palliative care, really?

Joe didn’t understand it at first.
Like many people, he thought it meant the end.

But once it was explained properly, he realised it wasn’t about the end of life — it was about quality of life.

✔️ Support to manage symptoms
✔️ Help to plan and feel confident
✔️ Space to focus on what matters most

For Joe, that meant a 9,000km journey across the Nullarbor with his family — a dream made possible with the support of the Palliative Care Team at Albury Wodonga Health.

This National Palliative Care Week (10–16 May), we’re sharing Joe’s story, because he wanted others to understand what palliative care really is.

🌈💙 International Nurses Day 💙🌈

Today we celebrate the incredible nurses who walk beside our Country Hope kids and families through some of life’s toughest moments.

From regional hospitals to specialist wards in the city, nurses do so much more than provide medical care. They offer comfort during long days and sleepless nights, calm anxious parents, hold little hands through procedures, celebrate milestones, and bring compassion when families need it most 🌈

Many of our families spend weeks or even months away from home during treatment, and the kindness, patience and dedication shown by nurses can make an overwhelming journey feel just that little bit easier.

To every nurse caring for our Country Hope children, thank you for the extraordinary difference you make every single day 💛🌈

💜 Happy International Nurses Day! 💜

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible people at the heart of healthcare: our nurses.

This year’s theme, “Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” is a powerful reminder of just how much nurses do and why supporting them matters.

Across Albury Wodonga Health, our nurses bring so much more than skill and expertise.

They bring kindness, humour, reassurance, and an ability to make even the toughest days feel a little bit easier.

And if you want to see what that impact looks like over a lifetime, look no further than Liz O’Connor.

For more than 50 years, Liz has cared for our community as a nurse, first joining Albury Base Hospital in 1975!

Liz’s story is echoed in the dedication, care and commitment we see from our nurses every day.

To every nurse across AWH: Thank You 🙏

Thank you for stepping up to support our Mother’s & Other’s Day Raffle!

At AWH, our teams regularly care for patients who arrive without safe, supportive footwear - something many of us take for granted, but which can make a huge difference to someone’s safety, comfort and independence.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, funds raised will help provide proper footwear for patients who may otherwise go without, helping reduce the risk of falls and supporting safer care. 🙏

A special thank you to Athletes Foot for generously donating 8 pairs of brand new shoes to support the initiative! 👟

And now 🥁 ... congratulations to our lucky winners!

To everyone who bought a ticket, donated prizes, shared the raffle or helped spread the word - thank you!

If you missed the opportunity to purchase a ticket but would still like to support this cause, you can make a tax-deductible donation here: www.awh.org.au/support-us/make-a-donation

Please include “SHOES” as your donation reference.

🧡🧡 From carols to care this National Palliative Care Week 🧡🧡

Funds raised at last year’s Wodonga Carols by Candlelight are making a difference for palliative care patients at Albury Wodonga Health.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, and the volunteers and staff who sold candles on the night, these funds have helped purchase items that support comfort, dignity and connection at the end of life – from specialised cushions and mobility aids, to simple but meaningful items like hair washing equipment and dry shampoo.

They’re also supporting our volunteers with fuel vouchers, helping them continue visiting patients at home, offering connection and care when it matters most.

And later this year, a new remembrance tree at Wodonga Hospital will give families a place to honour loved ones with messages in their memory.

This National Palliative Care Week, it’s a reminder that even small acts of support can make a real difference.

We want to address some of the feedback we've received about our recent update on hospital demand and emergency department wait times.

Firstly, we're sorry. It's clear that our community feels we were blaming our staff for delays in care. That was not our intention, and it's not what we believe.

We know and appreciate that our staff are working incredibly hard under sustained pressures to care for our community and they do a wonderful job.

We were so pleased to have welcomed a new staff cohort to Albury Wodonga Health this week, and are continuing to look for ways to better support them.

We're proud of our staff, grateful for the care they provide every day, and sorry to anyone who felt this wasn't reflected in our communication.

We also want to thank our staff and community for their patience and understanding while our teams continue working hard to provide safe, high-quality care during periods of high demand.

Today is International Day of the Midwife! 💜

We’re celebrating the midwives who support families through some of life’s biggest moments.

This year’s theme — One Million More Midwives — highlights the global need for more midwives, supported to do what they do best.

At Albury Wodonga Health, that future is already taking shape.

Since 1997, 191 midwives have completed training here through our Midwifery Postgraduate Program.

One of our current postgraduate students is Jade Knox.

Inspired by the care she received at Wodonga Maternity during the birth of her first child, she decided 10 years later to follow that path herself:

"It was always a dream to support women and families during their journey into
parenthood, through the good, and the bad, but not something I was sure I would ever actually pursue. After the birth of my second child, I decided it was time to focus on a fulfilling career, something I would be proud of and was passionate about."

"Being a midwife means showing up for people during one of the most vulnerable and
important times of their lives... Hopefully one day I will be the midwife who inspires someone else to follow their dreams."

Read Jade's story here: https://bit.ly/4tfvOSg

To every midwife across AWH, and those learning alongside them, thank you. 🙏

- Tuesday 5 May: 6PM - 6AM
- Wednesday 6 May: 6PM - 6AM
- Thursday 7 May: 6PM - 6AM
- Friday 8 May: 5PM - 6AM

We are installing the Key Health Worker Accommodation units on-site! We're asking staff and the community to please avoid using the Nolan House entry or carparks during the times listed above, as there will be large trucks and cranes onsite.

There will be traffic controllers onsite to help entry if needed, but please expect delays. We encourage staff and visitors to use the Main Entrance and parking. The AWRCC entrance is open, and can be reached via East Street carpark entrance.

The areas marked in red on the map will be closed during nightworks, and access to the orange and green will be managed by our traffic controllers. These areas will be open for access during the day.

There will be some construction noise overnight, and the team are doing what they can to reduce noise and vibration. We apologise for any disruption or inconvenience.

The Key Health Workers Accommodation will provide modern, affordable short-term accommodation for nurses, doctors, allied health practitioners and trainees who choose to live and work in the Border region. The units will help ease the transition for new recruits and support staff undertaking placements, training, or relocation from metropolitan and interstate areas.
