Albury Wodonga Health

Albury Wodonga Health Australia's only cross-border health service, providing safe, connected care to Albury-Wodonga communities.

Albury Wodonga Health acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we live and work. This land has never been ceded and always was and always will be Aboriginal land. We recognise the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. Albury Wodonga Health is a cross-border health service who provides a comprehensive and growing range of health services to the communities of Southern New South Wales and Northeast Victoria. Since our establishment in 2009, we have continued to evolve and bring more services closer to home for over 300,000 people. We have 24 sites across Albury, Wodonga, Beechworth, and Wangaratta, which enable us to deliver access to high-quality, safe and connected health care right here on the Border.

It's Perioperative Nurses Week! 🌟

This week is all about celebrating the incredible impact perioperative nurses make every single day to our health service and our community.

Meet Machele! 🙌

"I am a registered nurse working in Recovery, also known as the Wake-Up Room!"

"I care for patients as they come out of surgery or procedures, helping them through what can be a vulnerable and challenging time. I also run a clinic for patients with multiple sclerosis when they come in for their medication."

"My nursing journey with AWH began back in 1980 at Albury Base Hospital. After a short stint in Sydney working in paediatrics, I returned to Albury as the NUM of the children’s ward and was part of the planning and move to the new hospital. From 1994–1999, I was the Paediatric Room Practice Manager, then returned after starting a family to work in Day Surgery Recovery, where I’ve been ever since!"

"What I love most is that no day or shift is ever the same. Every patient is different, and I feel privileged to help them recover during what’s often a difficult time. It’s a challenging role, but having a supportive, cohesive team and management makes all the difference. We share knowledge, support each other, and always put patient care first, making their hospital stay just that little bit easier."

"🍍 on pizza? Absolutely not!"

It's Perioperative Nurses Week! 🌟

This week is all about celebrating the incredible impact perioperative nurses make every single day to our health service and our community.

Meet Sarah! 👋

"I’m a Scrub Scout nurse at Wodonga Theatre, and I’ve been part of the perioperative team here at AWH for the past 10 years."

"Every day, I work alongside an incredible surgical team to make sure each case runs safely and smoothly. As a scrub scout, we work in pairs to prepare the operating theatre, ensure all equipment is ready, assist with patient positioning, maintain a sterile field, anticipate the surgeon’s needs, and complete accurate documentation. It’s a role that demands precision, communication, and a whole lot of teamwork, and I love it."

"I came into nursing as a mature age student and discovered my passion for theatre during a 6-week student placement in Canberra. That experience sparked something in me, and during my grad year at AWH, I spent 6 months in theatre… and never left!"

"What I enjoy most? The organised chaos, the variety, and the unpredictability of what might come through the door next. But above all, it’s the team, they’re more like family than colleagues. We support each other, we laugh, and we get the job done together."

"Does pineapple belong on pizza? Absolutely yes, especially with chicken and BBQ sauce!"

⚠️ High Pollen Alert ⚠️

A high pollen forecast has been issued for across Northeast Victoria today. Grass pollen can cause hay fever, allergies and asthma. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, here are a few things you can do to reduce your exposure to pollen:

🌿 Avoid mowing grass or wear a mask if you do – stay indoors when the grass is being mowed.
🏡 Keep windows closed in your home and car.
😎 Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
💊 Treat your hay fever/pollen symptoms with antihistamines, decongestants, or nasal corticosteroid sprays.
💊 If you have asthma caused by pollen, make sure you carry your prescribed medication and follow your asthma action plan.

It's Perioperative Nurses Week! 🌟

This week is all about celebrating the incredible impact perioperative nurses make every single day to our health service and our community.

👋 Meet Tim!

"I’m the Perioperative Services Manager at AWH, overseeing Operating Theatres, Day Procedure Units, and Central Sterilising Services across our Albury and Wodonga campuses."

"My day-to-day work focuses on planning and coordinating the entire perioperative journey, from pre-op bookings to theatre scheduling and post-op discharge or inpatient admission. It’s all about ensuring patients have safe, efficient access to surgical care and exploring ways to improve models of care, like same-day surgery and shorter hospital stays."

"I started at AWH back in 2011 as part of the first cohort of new graduate nurses. My final rotation at the end of 2011 was in theatre, and I never left! Over the years, I’ve moved from scrub/scout and recovery roles to Nurse Unit Manager, and now into my current leadership position. Nursing has always been my passion, and I love that I’ve been able to build my career close to home while enjoying the rural lifestyle."

"I work with an incredible team of leaders and clinicians who are all focused on giving patients the best possible experience during what can be one of the most vulnerable times in their lives. There’s a real sense of pride knowing the work we do can dramatically improve someone’s quality of life."

Does pineapple belong on pizza? "Absolutely! It adds the perfect touch of sweetness to every bite."" 🍍✅

What do IV bags, oxygen masks, and playground slides have in common?

They can all be made from recycled PVC!

For National Recycling Week, we’re shining a light on one of the most valuable (and underrated!) hospital recyclables.

When kept clean and separated, PVC can be transformed into gumboots, garden hoses and even playground equipment.

Pretty amazing, right?

At AWH, our Green Team is helping divert PVC from landfill each year, saving resources and creating something new in the process.

👋 Meet Julie!

"I’m an all-rounder in the operating theatre, which means I could be the anaesthetic nurse, the scrub scout nurse, or the Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) nurse on any given day. As an anaesthetic nurse, my day starts with preparing equipment and making sure everything is safe and ready. Every patient has their own anaesthetic plan, so I work closely with the anaesthetist and the perioperative team to deliver it safely. I meet and greet each patient, explain what’s ahead, and do my best to build trust in a very short window, helping ease any anxiety before surgery."

"During the procedure, I’m there to keep the patient warm, comfortable, and safe, acting as their advocate whenever needed. After surgery, we wake them up and hand over care to PACU, then it’s time to reset for the next patient."

"I started at AWH in 2018 as the NUM of Anaesthetics and PACU. Before that, I was Elective Surgery Access Manager at Western Health in Melbourne. I love that this role gives me flexibility and fulfillment while raising a young family."

"Every day is different! I love the people I meet and the team I work with, everyone is focused on the same goal: our patients. And we know how to have fun doing it!"

🍕 Does pineapple belong on pizza? Never. And never mention it again. 😂

Today, we join together to mark Remembrance Day, the anniversary of the day the guns fell silent on the Western Front and the First World War came to an end.

Remembrance Day is not just about history, it’s about people.

It’s about families, communities, and the enduring impact of service. Here on the Border, we are reminded of this every day. Our region is home to many veterans and their loved ones, and at Albury Wodonga Health, we are privileged to support them through compassionate care and connection.

Today, we honour the courage and sacrifice of those who have served, and continue to serve, in defence of our nation and its values.

We remember those who never returned, and those who came home changed, carrying the weight of their experiences with quiet strength.

Let us take this moment to reflect, to acknowledge, and to thank those who have given so much.

Lest we forget.
