Albury Wodonga Health

Albury Wodonga Health Australia's only cross-border health service, providing safe, connected care to Albury-Wodonga communities.

Albury Wodonga Health acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we live and work. This land has never been ceded and always was and always will be Aboriginal land. We recognise the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. Albury Wodonga Health is a cross-border health service who provides a comprehensive and growing range of health services to the communities of Southern New South Wales and Northeast Victoria. Since our establishment in 2009, we have continued to evolve and bring more services closer to home for over 300,000 people. We have 24 sites across Albury, Wodonga, Beechworth, and Wangaratta, which enable us to deliver access to high-quality, safe and connected health care right here on the Border.

A statement from AWH CEO, Bill Appleby:

This week, the Border Mail reported on an incident that took place last March, where our nurses and security guards were attacked while at work on our maternity ward in Wodonga. This was a distressing incident for all involved, in what was no doubt a vulnerable situation, but violence and aggression towards our staff is unacceptable.

Occupational violence and aggression (OVA) remain a serious challenge in healthcare, with AWH recording 1,180 incidents in 2024–25 alone. Last year, we launched our campaign “No Excuse, End the Abuse”, to raise awareness of how tragically common these incidents are, and to empower staff to speak up when it happens. Because OVA is not just “part of the job” - your physical and psychological safety at work is a fundamental right.

Our nurses, doctors, security guards, and all of our frontline workers carry the weight of OVA, whether it happens to them, or witnessing it occurring to a colleague. The damage goes beyond the moment, and it’s incumbent on all of us to do more to prevent this from happening.

To our community - help us make sure that our frontline workers are safe while they care for us. See our healthcare workers as real people. Speak up if you see inappropriate behaviour. Talk in your community and networks about cultures of violence. Together, we can ensure respect, safety, and dignity for the people who care for us all.

🏥 A regional landmark in healthcare - a first look at the proposed Clinical Services Building.

We’re proud to share a first look at newly released artist impressions of the proposed Clinical Services Building (CSB) - the centrepiece of the Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital Project, the largest health investment ever delivered for our border region. The new 7-storey CSB will collocate key acute overnight clinical services at Albury, helping deliver a safer, more efficient and future-ready hospital network for the growing border community. For the latest project update, check out the link here: https://bit.ly/4alxH9u

The CSB will include:
• 110 additional overnight beds - including medical and surgical inpatient beds across three new inpatient units, and mental health beds. Emergency care bed services will also be expanded.
• A new 32-bed Mental Health Unit, replacing and expanding current services offered by Nolan House;
• Advanced operating theatres, including a hybrid theatre for highly complex procedures and a procedure room;
• Expanded ambulatory care and cardiac diagnostics;
• Enhanced maternity and birthing services, including a special care nursery, consolidating women’s and newborn services at Albury;
• A new state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU);
• Allied health and outpatient facilities;
• A new hospital main entry, landscaped outdoor areas, and expanded visitor spaces and retail opportunities;
• More car parking on the hospital campus by the completion of the project.

🚗 🅿️ Permanent verge parking now approved ✅
• Planning approval has now been received for permanent verge parking along East Street and Borella Road, delivering more than 200 additional permanent parking spaces across four locations.
• Construction of the verge parking areas is expected to begin in early 2026, and access to hospital services will be maintained throughout these works.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback during the public exhibition period in late 2025 - your input has helped shape refinements to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility and campus amenity.

Thank you to our staff and community who continue to help shape this important project for the border region.

👋 Meet our 2026 medical intern, Heidi!

Heidi grew up in Bathurst and completed her medical degree through Charles Sturt University, finishing her studies based in Swan Hill. She’s now starting her intern year at Albury Wodonga Health, bringing with her a strong connection to regional communities.

Before medicine, Heidi worked in community arts. Accompanying her mum on a helicopter transfer to Sydney after she had a stroke was a defining moment, opening Heidi’s eyes to a career in health, particularly in regional settings. Add in the timing of COVID, and a big career switch wasn’t far away.

What’s she most excited about at AWH? Finishing a big day of work with friends by jumping in the Murray – and maybe learning some medicine along the way 😂

Heidi is especially looking forward to general medicine, keen to build a strong foundation and grow from there. She also has a real interest in psychiatry and is excited to finish her intern year in that space.

This year, Heidi hopes to fully immerse herself in the Albury-Wodonga and local health communities, making the most of everything the region has to offer. “I'm excited to do the job I've been training for, for so long now,” she said.

While the Emergency Department still brings a few nerves, she says those jitters are easing thanks to how welcoming and supportive the AWH team has been.

Welcome to the team, Heidi – enjoy those river dips! 💙

We’re incredibly grateful to our community for their recent generous donations to our Kerferd Unit in Wangaratta.

A huge THANK YOU to ADRA Op Shop in Albury for donating a brand-new massage chair.

For our consumers at Kerferd, this is more than just a chair. It helps calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and offers a way to feel more grounded when things feel overwhelming.

We’ve also received a very generous donation of exercise equipment - a treadmill, elliptical and exercise bike - thanks to Stacey Potter, with equipment supplied by Intersport Albury.

These donations make a real difference for our community accessing mental health care. Thank you!

26/01/2026

Severe to extreme heatwave conditions will persist in Northeast Victoria and Southern NSW for an extended period this week, peaking today (Tuesday, 27 January) and Wednesday, 28 January before gradually easing over the weekend.

Extreme heat can be dangerous for everybody, but there are steps you can take to stay cool.
✅Close blinds and shut windows early to pre-cool your home.
✅Stay cool using fans, air con and/or cold showers.
✅Avoid going out unless you have to and go early if you do.
✅Make a plan to check on elderly family, neighbours, friends, and anyone living alone.
✅Drink plenty of water and keep a full bottle handy when outside.

Know the signs of heat-related health problems. These include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headaches and rapid breathing.

Extreme heat can affect anybody and can trigger dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, life-threatening heat stroke, heart attack and kidney impairment.

If you need medical advice or someone you know is unwell, call Nurse-on-Call on 1300 60 60 24 for 24-hour health advice, see your doctor or contact Virtual Emergency Care – for non-life-threatening emergencies.

In an emergency, always call Triple Zero 000.
