Another corker of a post by the amazing Lara Briden. A game changer for me in practice when I learnt about histamine excess. Particularly relevant for those on a paleo style diet.
Fermented foods are yummy but they're not always helpful for health. If you have a histamine-sensitive condition such as PMS, PMDD, migraines, period pain, or heavy periods, then high-histamine foods could be making your symptoms worse. Histamine is a major driver of symptoms that get described as "estrogen dominance" (fluid retention, headaches, PMS, irritability).
High histamine foods include:
- alcohol, especially red wine and champagne
- cowβs dairy
- vinegar and fermented foods such as sauerkraut
- bone broth and fish stock
- avocado
- smoked or canned fish
- dried fruit including dates
- berries
- nuts
- chocolate
- bananas
