High-quality supervision has the power to transform our practice and strengthen the care we provide to our communities. It is an essential and ongoing component of professional practice for dietitians.

As a supervisor, I am dedicated to supporting my fellow clinicians on their journey to create a strong and supportive practice for their clients. Supervision provides great benefit to clinicians, clients and helps to strengthen and sustain our workforce.

If you are a dietitian seeking a supervisor, please feel free to reach out to Courtney via a direct message or email info@layerednd.com.au

The Cost of Appearance Ideals report, published earlier this year by the Butterfly Foundation, highlights how body dissatisfaction and appearance-based discrimination drive lifelong struggles and impose staggering social and economic costs.

Nearly half of Australians facing appearance-based discrimination have experienced weight-based discrimination.

It’s time to change the ideal — not the body!

Weight stigma is the unfair treatment people face based on body size, often fuelled by the belief that weight is simply a matter of choice. However, many factors play a role, like genetics, environment, and health.

This bias can affect well-being in everyday life, from healthcare to social settings. Understanding the issue is the first step toward greater compassion and inclusion.

Dietitian or Nutritionist – what’s the difference?

In Australia, anyone can call themselves a Nutritionist — there's no regulation around the title, which means qualifications can vary widely.

Dietitians, however, follow a much more regulated path.

To use the title, they must have:
• A recognised university degree
• Ongoing professional development
• Adherence to the Dietitians Australia Code of Conduct

Only Dietitians who meet these standards can become Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs).

Understanding the difference can help you make more informed decisions about your health.

Medicare, and many private health insurers recognise the APD credential. This means people who are eligible for a Medicare treatment plan may be eligible for a rebate when seeing an APD. Discuss your eligibility with your GP.

It’s Weight Stigma Awareness Week [September 22-26] — a week to challenge harmful anti-fat bias in our society.

This year's theme is 'Healing Without Harm: Ending Weight Stigma in Healthcare.'

We must challenge harmful assumptions about weight and advocate for inclusive and respectful care for people in all bodies.

Weight Stigma Awareness Week is here to educate, empower, and spark real conversations about the impacts of weight stigma with a mission to eliminate anti-fat bias and end the associated stigma, shame, trauma and discrimination related to body shape and size.

Unpacking the why...

More than 1.1 million Australians are affected by an eating disorder, but every journey is unique. There’s no single cause, and that’s why we must:

- Be curious
- Listen without judgment
- Meet people where they’re at

When we understand the why, we can offer better support and help break down harmful stereotypes that leave many feeling unseen.

This Body Image & Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2025, Layered Nutrition and Dietetics is standing up to raise awareness and improve access to support.

If you or someone you love needs help, reach out: info@layerednd.com.au

The Butterfly Foundation is also a great source of information to anyone in Australia impacted by eating disorders and body image issues.
