This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, an ABC News investigation lays bare a crisis hiding in plain sight: sexual assault support services across Australia are buckling under demand, with no significant funding increase in decades.
An estimated 2.8 million Australians aged 18+ have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15. Yet nine out of ten women don't report it to police — and those who do often describe a system that re-traumatises rather than supports them.
Survivors Keelie McMahon and Ayla Williams share their stories — and their calls for change.

Their message is clear:
💡awareness saves lives and
🤐silence costs them.

Big week! ✊ On 7 April, we took our health equity message to the Australian Government's Senate Rural and Regional Affairs Transport References Committee — alongside our peak body Women's Health NSW — to push for a fairer Medicare system for all.

"The women's health sector plays an important role in health equity. This was recognised recently ... by the New South Wales government, with a $34.3 million core funding increase spread across four years in the 2023-24 state budget. The increase to core funding recognised the essential nature of community based health care and the domestic violence support that our members provide to women and children. When core funding doesn't keep pace with the demand upon our services, more pressure is placed on the public health hospital system," said Jackie McMillan, a senior project officer at Women's Health NSW.

Alongside our member, Women's Centre for Health and Wellbeing Albury Wodonga, we recently appeared before the Australian Government Senate Rural and Regional Affairs Transport References Committee. We talked about how we can improve health equity through the Medicare system.

💜 A powerful moment for our entire network!

Mariam Mourad from Macarthur Women's Health Centre — a proud member of Women's Health NSW — recently asked Greg Warren MP why governments should prioritise sustained funding and expansion of grassroots services like theirs.

His answer deserves to be shared far and wide:

"There's not too many more important things a government should do than support some of the most marginalised members of our community. Supporting those who are not in a position to support themselves is a fundamental priority for any government of any persuasion."

This isn't just Macarthur's story. From Western Sydney to regional NSW, our member centres — including Women's Centre for Health and Wellbeing in Albury — are on the ground every day, supporting women fleeing violence, navigating crisis, and rebuilding their lives.

Same story. Different centre. One network. 💜

Thank you, Greg Warren MP, for standing with us. And thank you, Mariam and Kate, for speaking up for all of us.

It was an honour and privilege to be part of this inquiry today, to give a voice to those in our community for Medicare equity.

Today Women's Health NSW and our member, Women's Centre for Health and Wellbeing Albury Wodonga, appeared before the Australian Government Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee in Albury. We contributed to this Inquiry because the women we see sit at the pointy end of health inequity in Australia. Most of the women accessing our services experience greater barriers to optimum health than the average Australian. Our statewide remit has shown us that these barriers are even more pronounced in rural, regional and remote locations. We look forward to outcomes from this Inquiry that improve health equity for women.

Did you know Australia has lower rates of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) use compared to similar countries — even though it's one of the most effective options out there?
If you're curious about what's available (including low-cost options), your local women's health centre is a great place to start the conversation.

Give us a call to see how we can help you - 026215773

Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is one of the most effective forms of reversible contraception. Yet Australian women use less of them than other comparable countries. You can chat to your local women's health centre about long-acting reversible contraception options, including low-cost options for insertion.

Is your attention giving you trouble?

The Jean Hailes for Women's Health National Women's Health Survey explored how Australian women navigate attention and memory challenges in their day-to-day lives, and the findings may surprise you.

Younger women are significantly more likely to report concerns about attention and short-term memory than their older counterparts. Consider these numbers:

👉60% of women aged 18–24 reported concerns about their attention, versus just 22% of women aged 65 and over.
👉36% of women aged 18–24 had concerns about their memory, compared to 16% of women aged 65 and over.

🧠Brain health isn't a conversation reserved for later in life — it's relevant at every age.

💡The encouraging part? Looking after your brain doesn't need to be overwhelming.

The advice you've likely come across before:
🗣️prioritising your mental health,
😴getting quality sleep,

🗣️ Children by Choice hosted a powerful Abortion Stigma session — a call to action to break down barriers and open up the conversation around abortion access.
Despite broad community support for abortion (thanks to recent research from The Australia Institute!), stigma still silences those seeking care and the providers who offer it.
It's time to change that. 💙
If you have an unwanted pregnancy, give us a call at the Women's Centre on 0260215773 to find out how we can help!

Today Women's Health NSW attended Children by Choice's Abortion Stigma event. The session was a powerful call to action to decrease stigma about accessing abortion in the face of contemporary rhetoric that can make abortion seekers and abortion providers feel afraid to talk about the issue or what they do for work. Perceived abortion stigma persists despite The Australia Institute recently finding broad support for abortion. Their survey found 89% of Australians support access, or access in some circumstances, to abortion: https://australiainstitute.org.au/post/overwhelming-support-for-abortion-access-despite-election-rhetoric-new-poll/

👩‍🦰Period poverty is a reality for thousands of women, girls and menstruating people across Australia. Without reliable access to essential products like tampons and pads, many are forced to make heartbreaking trade-offs between managing their periods and meeting other basic needs.

👱‍♀️Tampons remain among the most needed items in our Dignity Drive — yet they have only reached 26% of the volume requested by their charity partners, meaning the gap between supply and demand is significant.

👩‍🦱Access to tampons isn't just practical — it's about safety, comfort and dignity, especially for those facing homelessness, domestic violence or financial hardship.

🧕You can make a difference this month by contributing to the Share the Dignity Drive. Donation points are available at all Woolworths Supermarkets and participating businesses across the country, so next time you shop, consider adding an extra packet of tampons to your trolley.

Help Share the Dignity by donating tampons and period products at a collection point near you.

https://www.sharethedignity.org.au/

Share the Dignity aims to bring dignity to women, girls and those who menstruate who are experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, and period poverty through the distribution of period products and essential items.
