One of the most common nervous system misunderstandings I see in therapy:
People try to calm themselves when their body is actually mobilised.
When your nervous system is in fight or flight, the body is full of activation energy.
Trying to force relaxation at that point can feel frustrating, ineffective, or even impossible.
Often the first step is completing the stress response โ movement, shaking out tension, walking, expressing emotion โ before the body can settle.
Regulation is not just โcalming downโ.
It is responding accurately to what state your nervous system is in.
This is something we work through in therapy consistently.
