Today is Global Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Day, marked every year to help raise awareness about Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

MND is a term used to describe a group of diseases that affect nerve cells called 'motor neurons'.

Motor neurons carry messages from the brain to the muscles via the spinal cord. These messages allow us to make movements like walking, swallowing, talking and breathing.

In motor neurone disease, the nerves become damaged and start to die. When this happens, muscles start to weaken and waste away.

Currently, there is no cure for MND and it is life-limiting.

The speed at which MND progresses varies for each person. The average life expectancy is two to three years from diagnosis.

Every day in Australia, two people are diagnosed with MND. Around 2,688 Australians are thought to be living with MND at any one time.

Do you know how often routine prostate health checks should be performed?

If you are 50–69 with no family history of prostate cancer, it is recommended that you have a PSA blood test every two years.

If you have a family history of prostate cancer, discuss earlier testing with your doctor. They may advise you to have a PSA blood test every two years starting from age 40–45. This will depend on how strong your family history is.

Influenza vaccination is recommended every year for anyone six months of age and over, to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with the flu.

As strains of the flu virus can change from year to year, receiving an annual flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself.

The best time to vaccinate is autumn, but flu vaccines can be given at any time during the flu season. It usually takes up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to provide protection.

Today is World Asthma Day, an annual event organised to improve asthma awareness.

What triggers asthma?

Asthma can be triggered by your environment or lifestyle. Cold and flu viruses, smoke, exercise or allergies to pollen or dust mites are all common types of triggers.

Some triggers are avoidable (like cigarette smoke), while others are very difficult to avoid (such as weather changes and pollen).

Knowing your asthma triggers and understanding how to avoid them can help to lower your chance of having asthma symptoms.

Keep your asthma under control
▪️ Understand your triggers and avoid exposure where possible
▪️ Use your asthma medications as prescribed
▪️ Have a written Asthma Action Plan

It is very important to visit your doctor if your asthma is not under control.
