For a lot of people a new year means an opportunity to start or re-start good habits like regular exercise

Whether it be something as demanding as running or high intensity sport, or a less intense activity like walking it is important to understand "loading"

Whilst it is awesome to see people getting back in to activity it is important to remember a number of important factors to avoid the onset of niggles and issues like tendonitis or joint pain. Some include:
- Overall dosage: how much did I do last week - is what I am planning this week a big increase?
- Intensity: is my body ready to work this hard?
- Appropriate warm up and recovery: Am I ready to go? and have I recovered enough from my last session or am I still sore/fatigued by the time I go again

Simple focuses can be very helpful in avoiding the issues we see so regularly in the world of physio (especially this time of year): achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, ankle pain, hip pain, lower back pain, shoulder pain

Happy exercising!

On Monday we had the chance to take in all the latest information about pain and how it is interpreted and managed, via PainAdelaide 2024

As with any course there is so much information to digest! But the resounding take away was the importance of being good at communication

For physios this looks like a number of things:

- Providing knowledge to clients by explaining their issue in a way that can allow them to understand what is going on with their body
- Helping clients to understand what a management plan might look like: what will be done, how long should it take, and what they need to do along the way

We are constantly looking for ways to develop our practice and seminar days such as Monday allow us to do so

What is muscle overloading? πŸ€”

This is something we often mention to patients, but why are physios so obsessed with 'loading'?

Well, loading is essentially referring to the workload different areas of our body are exposed to

Muscle overloading is when we are subjecting an area of our body to more workload/efforts than it has the capacity to tolerate. Doing this for long enough will make us more likely to develop tendonitis or muscle tears

The best thing we can do to minimise this issue is to recover well (all the good stuff like icing, gentle forms of exercise or 'active rest', good sleep, or stretching) AND increase our capacity so it's harder to become overloaded by building up our training over time or developing our muscular conditioning

Our body is great to us when we are great to it, so as an active person - remember to manage your loading and it will keep you on the park for longer!
