For a lot of people a new year means an opportunity to start or re-start good habits like regular exercise
Whether it be something as demanding as running or high intensity sport, or a less intense activity like walking it is important to understand "loading"
Whilst it is awesome to see people getting back in to activity it is important to remember a number of important factors to avoid the onset of niggles and issues like tendonitis or joint pain. Some include:
- Overall dosage: how much did I do last week - is what I am planning this week a big increase?
- Intensity: is my body ready to work this hard?
- Appropriate warm up and recovery: Am I ready to go? and have I recovered enough from my last session or am I still sore/fatigued by the time I go again
Simple focuses can be very helpful in avoiding the issues we see so regularly in the world of physio (especially this time of year): achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, ankle pain, hip pain, lower back pain, shoulder pain
Happy exercising!
