Honoring the loss of another natural birth pioneer.
Dr. Michel Odent's family shared he has passed away on August 19th after a brief illness.
His legacy includes numerous books, advocating for de-medicalizing birth, encouraging instinctual birthing methods including pools and early initiation of breastfeeding.
From the website www.wombecology.com:
"Michel Odent, MD, has been in charge of the surgical unit and the maternity unit at the Pithiviers (France) state hospital (1962-1985). He is the author of the first article in the medical literature about the initiation of lactation during the hour following birth (1977), of the first article about the use of birthing pools (Lancet 1983), and of the first article applying the ‘Gate Control Theory of Pain’ to obstetrics (1975)."

The brain actually shrinks during pregnancy and regrows after birth taking 6-24 months to return to normal (depending on the study you read). Interestingly, pre-eclampsia has been shown in some recent studies to magnify this effect- greater shrinkage.

The reasons are uncertain but speculation says it is a refinement that allows for greater attentiveness to nonverbal cues of infants.

Pregnancy sculpts the brain in a way that may improve social cognition and caregiving.
