Found Hearts were really lucky to have had some special time with Laura V, a trained and qualified dog behaviourist, author , known from radio sessions from 3AW and the awesome TV show A New Leash on Life with Joel Creasey where she not only helped save pound dogs but saved one for herself to add to her pet family. A recent mother who still ensures her family all mesh well.

How to Eat Healthy on a Budget

With food prices on the rise, those high calorie low cost “meal deals” are very tempting!

While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying pizza in moderation, there is something wrong with the “healthy foods cost too much” logic.

Because it’s not entirely true. There are more options than many people realise.

Choose affordable whole foods.

Despite what some people think, many minimally-processed whole foods cost less than their more processed cousins.

Take the potato. A medium one costs about a dollar less than small fries.

That potato also has a fraction of the calories (161 vs. 220)—as well as more of a wide variety of nutrients.

The humble potato is just one example of many minimally-processed whole foods that are STILL quite affordable.

Aim for progress, not perfection.

So-called “superfoods” like quinoa can be super pricey.
Brown rice, on the other hand, is about as affordable as it’s ever been, especially if you buy it in bulk. It’s the same with most varieties of beans and lentils.

“You don’t have to pick the ‘best’ in each category to improve your nutrition—even a small improvement in food quality can go a long way. Choose what proteins, smart carbs, healthy fats, fruits, and veggies work for your budget, aiming for just a little better than where you’re at right now

My name is Karen Howden, part of PT on the Run team, but what you may not know is that I am also a Weight Management Consultant and Nutrition Coach.

Ever wondered how to successfully lose weight and keep it off?

When you make small changes over time, you’re likely to create new healthy habits and adhere to them.

When you make disruptive or drastic changes, like eliminating an entire food group or following a restrictive diet, those changes are not sustainable - as soon as you stop the diet, the weight returns. And that’s not fun for anyone! Small, attainable changes lead to long term better behaviour patterns :)

You also need to be patient. When a person is trying to make health related changes, if they don’t meet their goals or don’t see success right away, they can feel discouraged and want to give up.
However it's about making smart goals—smart, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

It's also really helpful if you don't have to do it alone. Having someone who can support you and hold you accountable can be very helpful when you’re trying to maintain your weight.

For every kilo of weight that you lose, you will be getting back more of your life because your health and overall wellbeing affects everything that you do every day.

From going grocery shopping, doing housework, walking up stairs, playing with your children or your grandchildren etc, all these things get easier when you are fitter, healthier and are not carrying around excess kilos.

Ultimately, losing weight and improving your health will end up with you:

* Feeling great
* Waking up every day with more energy and vitality
* Being able to do more things that life has to offer and not being
limited because of being overweight or unfit
* And most importantly, you are increasing your chances of a
longer, healthier, quality life

So you can see that overall weight loss is important for your health.

Exercise is also really important for your health - exercise is not just about getting you to your weight loss goal, but it plays a vital role in your overall health and wellness.

We hope you are all doing the best you can in yet another lockdown.

They don't get easier - in fact for most they are getting harder.

However if we can turn a negative into a positive, we will certainly feel better for it.

And just know that once you decide you want to get fit, lose weight, feel good about yourself - it's always hard to take the first step.

However we are here to take every step with you. Whether it's weight loss, fitness or healthy eating.

We have helped clients not only improve their fitness and mental health through exercise and healthy eating over the last decade, we have also helped many clients lose weight.

Clients have lost up to 18 kilos over a 6 - 7 month period and KEPT it off. I won't bore you with the science - but it's next to impossible to go on a crash diet, lose weight (yes you can), keep it off permanently (unlikely no) - and why? Because you haven't learned anything from the diet you were on to apply in your everyday life.

New habits, understanding what you are eating and why, learning how to incorporate exercise you actually like into your life... all these are factors in permanent weight loss. And most importantly, to still eat what you like and lose weight!!!

Lockdown is an opportunity to try all these things.

PUT FOOD TO WASTE OR WAIST???

When I was a kid we were encouraged to eat all the food on our plates before we could get dessert or even to leave the table.
We always used to fill our plates up, preferring to have one large serve than smaller first serves and going back for more if necessary (having said that, serving sizes are massively larger NOW than they were 40 years ago!).

Personally I hate throwing out food, I feel guilty and also frustrated seeing good food being thrown away knowing that children all over the world don’t have enough nutrition to get through their day.

Over the past few years I have seen this with clients and it is often a cause for weight gain –HENCE PUT FOOD TO WASTE OR WAIST?
