Failing a workplace drug test doesn’t always mean you’re instantly fired.

In New South Wales, employers are expected to show they’ve tried to support the worker first often through rehab programs or an Employee Assistance Program.

But if the tests keep failing… the outcome can change quickly.

There’s more to this than most people think.

“Movement is key to getting better. Don’t sit around and do nothing.”

It sounds simple but it’s one of the most misunderstood parts of recovery.

Too many injured workers are told to rest and wait. But in reality, staying inactive for too long can delay recovery, increase time off work, and make it harder to return to normal life.

In this episode of Behind the Claim, Stephen sits down with Johnathon Beshay (exercise physiologist & chiropractor) to break down what actually helps people recover and why some injuries don’t improve the way they should.

This isn’t just theory. It’s real insight from working with injured workers, employers, and organisations like the Australian Defence Force.

If you’ve been injured at work or support someone who has, you need to hear this is a conversation.

Think rest is the best way to recover from an injury?

Not always.

While rest is important early on, too much of it can actually slow you down.
Research shows that complete rest can lead to muscle loss, up to 5% strength per week.

That means the longer you stay inactive, the harder your recovery can become.

The key?
✅ Stay active (within your limits)
✅ Gradually return to movement
✅ Follow a structured plan

Whether it’s rehab exercises or suitable duties at work, movement is what helps you heal better and faster.

Don’t just rest... recover the right way.

Injured at work? You don’t just go back to “normal.”

There’s something called suitable duties and it’s there to protect you.

That could mean:
✔️ Shorter hours
✔️ Lighter tasks
✔️ Temporary role changes

The goal isn’t to push through the pain.
It’s to help you recover safely while getting back to work gradually.

A lot of workers don’t know this… and end up doing more than they should.

Make sure you know your rights and don’t rush your recovery.

A worker followed instructions… and lost his arm.

He was told to clean a machine while it was still running.
No proper training. No safety procedure.
A completely preventable incident.

The result?

Life-changing injuries and over $100,000 in penalties for the company.
No jail time.

So the real question is:
Is this justice… or just the cost of doing business?

Workplace safety isn’t optional.
Because shortcuts don’t just save time they cost lives.

What do you think? Was the punishment enough?

Thinking about leaving your job while on workers’ compensation?

It’s a lot more complicated than most people realise.

Yes! you can resign, change jobs, or even be dismissed while on a claim. But that doesn’t mean everything stays the same. Your weekly payments, medical support, and return-to-work obligations can all be affected depending on your situation.

We’ve seen people make this decision without understanding the full impact only to find their entitlements reduced or conditions changed later on.

Before you make a move, take a step back and understand:
• What happens to your payments
• How it affects your claim
• What obligations you still have

A simple decision now can have long-term consequences.

Most workplaces think they know what’s happening on the ground.

But there’s often a gap between what’s planned… and what actually gets done.

If you want to improve safety tomorrow, start simple:
👉 Go and see the work.
👉 Talk to your people.
👉 Look under the hood.

That’s where the real risks and the real solutions are.

Most safety policies look great on paper… but fall apart on site.

When procedures are too complex, hard to understand, or disconnected from real work, they don’t get followed, they get ignored.
And that’s where the real risk begins.

If your team can’t easily understand and apply your safety systems, it’s not a people problem, it’s a system problem.
Simple. Clear. Practical. That’s what actually keeps people safe.

A $20K investment could save you $150K+ in injury costs.

Too often, businesses hesitate on prevention until they’re dealing with long-term claims, lost productivity, and rising premiums. The real cost of workplace injuries goes far beyond the claim itself.

Smart businesses don’t wait for injuries to happen. They invest early, protect their people, and save significantly in the long run.

When insurers delay or communication breaks down, it doesn’t just slow processes, it impacts people.

The key is knowing how to respond: start by resolving it directly, escalate when needed, and use the right channels to ensure accountability. A structured approach can make all the difference in getting outcomes back on track and supporting injured workers properly.

A sedentary workforce. Rising health risks. Low energy.

Instead of accepting it, they made a change.

With simple, low-cost wellbeing initiatives and leadership leading from the front participation skyrocketed and the results spoke for themselves.
This is what happens when you invest in your people, not just your processes.

💡 Sometimes the biggest impact doesn’t come from big budgets… it comes from getting people involved.
