Worry is something that we all do from time to time, however, if you find yourself constantly worrying you may be experiencing Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

Generalised Anxiety Disorder is a common mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

It is characterised by excessive, persistent, and uncontrollable worry about everyday things, often accompanied by physical symptoms.

The signs and symptoms of GAD can be categorized into four main categories: cognitive, emotional, physical, and behavioral.

Understanding these categories can help you identify the symptoms of GAD and seek help if you need it.

Cognitive symptoms of GAD include excessive worry, racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, and anticipating the worst outcomes. Cognitive symptoms of GAD can lead to mental exhaustion.

Emotional symptoms of GAD include restlessness, irritability, and a constant feeling of unease. You might find yourself feeling anxious, tense, or on edge for no apparent reason. Emotional symptoms of GAD can lead to feelings of frustration, anger, and low self-esteem.

Physical symptoms of GAD can be both distressing and debilitating. These symptoms include muscle tension, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, headaches, and stomach problems. If you experience physical symptoms of GAD, you might find it hard to function at work, school, or in social situations.

Behavioral symptoms of GAD include avoiding activities that might trigger anxiety and seeking constant reassurance from others.

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, seeking help from a mental health professional can be beneficial as GAD is a very treatable condition.

“Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be your best. Perfectionism is not about healthy achievement and growth. Perfectionism is the belief that if we live perfect, look perfect, and act perfect, we can minimize or avoid the pain of blame, judgment, and shame. It’s a shield" ― Brene Brown

This quote from Brene Brown gets to the heart of what perfectionism is and what it isn't. Many people mistakenly see perfectionism as a desirable quality necessary for success or acceptance. It's seen as a strength and something to admire.

In reality, perfectionism is a hindrance to happiness. It's pretty hard to be perfect so we will inevitably feel disappointed and demoralized when we don't achieve the unrelentingly high standards we set for ourselves.

Therapy is more than just talking. Learning to apply the skills learnt in sessions happens in the real world and to do this we leave the therapy room. Today we completed an exposure task in a creative way.

Are you a perfectionist? Do you find yourself setting unrealistic high standards? Do you become distressed, angry, or frustrated when things don’t go your way? Are you scared to fail?

If this sounds like you, then maybe you are experiencing perfectionist traits.

Perfectionistic traits are pretty common in high achievers, but they are also common in people who experience anxiety, and those who tend to procrastinate a bit too much.

If perfectionism is getting in the way of you achieving your goals and making you feel on edge all the time here are some ways you can manage it:

1) Remember, no one is perfect.
Making mistakes is a good thing, it helps us grow and learn from our experiences.

2) Strive for excellence, not perfection
Do this by setting realistic and achievable goals. This way you will gain a sense of accomplishment and pride in her work.

3) Take regular breaks
Get outside into nature and just be present, engage in exercise that you actually enjoy, and use relaxation techniques when you feel everything starting to get on top of you.

If you would like to learn more about perfectionism so you can do well but feel less stressed, book an appointment with one of our psychologists.
