This film aims to improve the body image of young people across Australia and the world. Aimed at an audience of 9-14 year olds, but equally engaging for adolescents, teachers, and parents, this film inspires, educates, and advocates for a world where we are not held back by the thoughts we have about the way we look. Instead, young people are encouraged to figure out what makes them unique and special, and use that to spark change.

I absolutely know and trust that coaches, athletic staff, trainers & anyone working with athletes cares. AND. I cannot tell you the number of times over my 15+ year career as a Sports Dietitian I have heard - either first or second hand - athletes and performers being given covert messages about their bodies and eating habits that may be well intentioned & "nice" but can be nonetheless really harmful.

🗨️ When it is said athletes that they could "trim down" or "eat healthier" or "cut back a bit" or whatever vague language is chosen, stop here.....THEY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. It's almost like saying "you need to lose weight, you definitely should not be gaining weight but FOR GOODNESS SAKE DO NOT GET AN EATING DISORDER because that would be like, really bad." You might think "well, it's not like I'm (insert name of coach who has been named as causing harm), I'm not telling my athletes to lose weight" but there are approximately 100 ways we can send these very same messages in vague ways (to protect ourselves) which athletes interpret in exactly the same way.

🗨️ What are ways we can support athletes?
1. Invest in a nutrition program for athletes or performers which focusses on nourishment & fuelling for growth & performance rather than achieving a body or body composition ideal. PLEASE DO NOT hold a one-off session with a Dietitian or Nutritionist unless you are crystal clear about your intentions for this session - your athletes KNOW that we have been trotted in to "tell them what to do"
2. Incorporate psychology support
3. Be committed to whole body wellbeing - mental health as well as physical health
4. Educate yourself & your staff about disordered eating and eating disorders - prevention & early intervention are CRITICAL
5. Do your own work - diet culture & power structures are RIFE in sports and athlete settings but it shows up in specific ways that can be unique to each sport.
6. Be committed to trauma-informed care.

Here's to 2022! However you celebrated the holidays, we hope your time was restful and you took some time out for yourself and your mental health.
🦋
We know that this time of year is particularly rife with diet culture messaging that says you need to change your body in order to be accepted, and marketing that makes you feel guilty for not exercising or eating certain foods.

It's never been more important to curate your social media feed to become a safe space for you, and reach out for professional support so you don't have to do this alone.

January’s anti-fatness may be cloaked in wellness and body positivity, but its core message to potential customers is the same it’s always been: their body is not good enough and they have not been disciplined enough to lose weight.

EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL

So I've done many cheese and wine tastings before, but never an extra-virgin olive oil tasting...until this week! And all done virtually!

A fascinating experience beyond what I imagined learning how Cobram Estate produce their high quality extra-virgin olive oil right here in Victoria, and tasting the differences between their varieties.

Extra-virgin olive oil has by far the highest amounts of antioxidants than any other oil! This means greater health benefits- think anti-inflammatory (including to help recovery after sport or training) and heart health.

Despite common belief, extra-virgin olive oil is perfectly safe to heat and cook with. And very little of it's antioxidants are lost when heated (they're more so lost if you recycle the oil for use another time).

How much extra-virgin olive oil is recommended every day?
Much more than what most people have! 45mL (or 3 tablespoons) every day in our diet is how much we need to get the full benefits! So don't be afraid to use more extra-virgin olive oil in your cooking, salad dressings and baking. You can even shallow-poach eggs in it!

Tip: buy Aussie-made extra-virgin olive oil and use it within 4-6 weeks after opening, as the taste and antioxidant content decrease over time.
