In 2024 we began our '4 Rivers' arts and cultural program for the Aboriginal men who come to Namatjira for healing.

The ‘4 Rivers’ name signifies the four rivers that form the traditional boundary of the Bundjalung Nation- the Tweed, Wilson, Richmond and Clarence rivers respectively

Since this time our residents have engaged in art therapy, traditional painting, screen-printing, music and song writing workshops, dance workshops, and craft classes and much more.

With weekly facilitators helping the men find their creative voice and expressing this through culture, healing and connection.

Its been a big success so far and some of the creations along the way have been amazing!

Every week our residents attend TAFE NSW Wollongbar learning new skills, as part of our Gulgihwen program of change.

Agriculture, construction, wood working, cheffing and much more with a new focus every month..

Replacing old ways with new and healthy habits, knowledge and skills is an important step on a new path for a new life.

Check out this creation by some of the men recently.

Check it out!

We have just recently finished our annual Bunya Nut harvesting from the trees here at Namatjira Haven.

- After that we patiently remove kernels
- Boil the seed for about 20/30 mins in salted water.
- Peel the skin off to reveal the nut itself.

These are the used to make pan toasted bunya nut, bunya nut pesto cooked with fish, bushtucker crocodile etc

An important part of our residents healing journey is having access to fresh, regular and healthy meals. Between our free range chickens, vegetable gardens and bushtucker on site there is always an element of our sustainable food sources provided for in every meal.

Last week Namatjira Haven hosted the Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation Cultural Bus for a session of truth telling with Uncles who survived the boys home.

Although tears were shed, we were made stronger by their honesty and resilience. The truth, no matter how hard it is, must be told...

We were honoured by their presence and shared some lunch with the Kinchela crew after the session and the Uncles then joined in our regular music group with the residents.

We are also thankful and grateful to the KBHAC for bringing the bus up and to Aboriginal Affairs NSW for the funding that made this possible.

Remembering this Fella!!

Its been just over 3 months since our Banjo passed. Leaving a permanent mark on our hearts, the residents who passed through our doors and all the staff here.

Banjo was a very unique animal and lived amongst the residents for over a decade. He knew who needed affection at the right time and always had space and a tail wag for new folks the way only a dog can.

We could swear we hear his little feet pattering about sometimes, and feel he is with us in spirit keeping an eye on the place....

We miss you Banjo! Rest in peace little fella!

Our 'Gulgihwen' (Change) program encourages our residents to find new healthy habits to replace old ways.

Every week they attend our partners at TAFE NSW Wollongbar learning new interests, skills on their way to find a new path.

We recently finished 4 weeks of horticulture, learning about plants, growth and sustainability.

Its going to be a hot one today.....

This stunning Magnolia is over 100 years old and provides shade in the recreation area. This tree stood on these grounds before Namatjira Haven was built here providing shade and peace and is a reminder that when things change around us, deep roots always stand the test of time!

What a beauty!
