Dementia affects not only those living with it, but also the incredible people who care for them. I know this personally by watching my dad face dementia, and supporting my mum as his carer, showed me the toll it takes physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Research shows that staying physically active and keeping the brain engaged can help reduce the risk of dementia. Simple daily movement, gentle stretches, and mindful exercises aren’t just good for the body, they help support the mind too.
For carers, prioritising your own movement and self-care is essential. Even a few minutes of stretching, walking, or simple mobility exercises each day can:
✔ Ease tension and fatigue
✔ Support posture and reduce pain from long hours of caregiving
✔ Boost energy and mental clarity
💡 Try this simple movement tip:
Sit tall in a chair, roll your shoulders back 10 times, gently stretch your arms overhead, and finish with a deep breath. Do this once in the morning and once in the evening – small habits make a big difference.
If you’re caring for a loved one or just want to keep your body and mind strong for the years ahead, bodywork, massage, and mindful movement can help you stay resilient, balanced, and energised.
💖 This Dementia Action Week, let’s remember to care for ourselves as much as we care for others.
