It's cold today, but last week the weather was just right for⠀
⠀
BEACH YOGA with a bunch of teenagers from our local high schools, MSJ and Emmanuel College. Teens can be a challenging clientele, but it is great fun, too! ⠀
⠀
We talked about the importance of breathing on both our physical and mental wellbeing, and how yoga can help as it improves posture and trains the many muscles that are involved in breathing. ⠀
⠀
I guess most of the young people were expecting the popular shapes, like down dog and triangle, and some quiet sitting, but I put them through some Kundalini yoga. Plenty of movement and a fair bit of physical and mental challenge. ⠀

SLEEP ISSUES...?⠀
⠀
After a long break from yoga, a lady visited our slow, restorative Hatha class on Thursday night. A couple of days later she returned, reporting that she had had the best sleep in a long time. ⠀
⠀
"After last Thursday's yoga session, I slept so much better - instantly!"⠀
⠀
If you have trouble falling asleep, it is important to reserve enough time for winding down before your planned bedtime. A slow, floor-based yoga class can do wonders! ⠀
⠀
While there are plenty of videos available, an in-person session at the studio may be a better choice as it offers a calm, quiet space without distractions and interruptions.⠀

Here we press the outer edge of the back foot (left) both down and against the wall while preparing for Utthita Parsvakonasana (Extended Side Angle Pose).

TIBETAN YOGA is on every Friday at 6:30pm.
What is Tibetan yoga?
It is most likely the oldest form of yoga that we know of. It was developed by ancient Tibetan monks as part of their health system - similar to the role of yoga within Ayurveda.
While there are several traditions of Tibetan yoga, we mostly practice a simplified form that is easy to learn while still having the benefits.
Suitable for absolute beginners and those with moderate movement restrictions. Most exercises can be practised on a chair.

Before we get back to our hip series, let's see what's new on the spring schedule: Most of all, EARLY MORNINGS are back, and we have a completely new class on board - TIBETAN YOGA (more about that one shortly)! ⠀
⠀
The MEDITATION class is now on Mondays, after the strong Hatha. Please note that there won't be a Tuesday 8pm option for a while, but we still have one on Thursdays (gentle, restorative Hatha), which you can also attend per live stream. ⠀
⠀
On Saturdays, we have slightly changed class times, and we'll add a bit of oomph to the Kundalini for those who like a a stronger practice in the morning. ⠀

It's HIP WEEK at the studio, so here come a few thoughts on hips: ⠀
⠀
Are your HIPS making you SICK? ⠀
⠀
Hip and low back issues can be debilitating on many levels. It's not only the pain as such. The inability to walk or stand tall without pain, or having trouble to get down to the ground and up again can be far worse. No longer being able to pursue activities that you love or even being dependent on assistance cuts deep into your confidence, self worth and mental wellbeing. ⠀
⠀
And this is not limited to the older population! Hip issues can start at any age, often as a result of prolonged sitting and/or lack of variety in movement. ⠀
⠀
But here is the good news:⠀
✅ Most hip and low back pain (around the sacrum) can be significantly reduced - if not completely eliminated - through the right form of exercise. ⠀
⠀
❌ However, S T R E T C H I N G those tight, painful hips and their surroundings is not necessarily a good idea. Actually, it can cause more harm than good... ⠀

GOAL: Complete 3 in-studio or online live classes of your choice each week for 6 consecutive weeks (01/09 until 13/10).
WIN: All successful participants are in the draw for a complete self-care package (valued approx. $300).
How it works:
🔸️Your ticket gives you access to UNLIMITED YOGA, meditation & movement classes for the 6-week period starting Friday 1st September.
🔸️Stay consistent: attend a minimum of 3 classes/week. No roll-over - each week counts new! However, you can attend 2 classes on the same day. For better tracking, you will receive a score card at the start of the challenge.
🔸️More than yoga! Each week you will find additional inspiration and self-care ideas in your mail box.
Winner(s) will be announced at our OPEN DAY on Saturday 14th October.

Yes, we have been rather quiet lately - but for a good reason. Over the last month or so we have been working on a few new things that will soon become more visible to you. ⠀
⠀
Furthermore, we are going to broaden our offering: Klaus (who has been more in the background so far) is currently completing his PT CERTIFICATION and will be available for small-group training sessions at the studio or outdoors towards the end of the year. In line with the idea of holistic movement, you can expect sessions with a little twist! Follow him on Insta and feel free to get in touch for enquiries. ⠀

Meanwhile, I (Carmen), have signed up for a professional AYURVEDA PRACTITIONER training. Still in the early stages, I can already say that this is exactly what I was hoping for! ⠀

While it will take a few months before I can offer individual consultations, I will certainly share some of the wisdom in my yoga classes. Plus, you may be able to take advantage of super-cheap training appointments that I need to practise my new skills. Follow me on my journey: 😊⠀

These ladies have been attending this class for almost a year - some even longer. In the meantime it's not only the yoga that makes them come, but also the social get-together. And we surely have a little chat and a good laugh before and/or after class!⠀
