🖤 Do you know the difference between your va**na and your v***a? 🖤

The va**na, also known as the birth canal, is internal. This is the passage of which blood passes during your period, and connects your cervix to your v***a.

Whilst, your v***a includes both the Labium Minor and Majus which are external of the body.

🖤 Such an important topic 🖤

I think this can be associated to all things within pregnancy, labour and birth.

As we know, the more you use your gut instinct, the more it will serve you and the stronger it will become.

Today, I had my 20 weeks ultra-sound. I was told that the GP requested an internal, pelvic ultra-sound. This was not discussed with me previously, I have no history or issues with my cervix and the radiologist just assumed I would happily go ahead.

The ultra sound showed nothing untoward, so I refused an internal. There was no reason for me to feel uncomfortable or to have this invasive procedure completed. My gut instinct was to say NO, I was amicable at the start, but then realized how unnecessary it really was.

I can see why you would simply say yes, and put up with being uncomfortable, but you have a choice, you are under no obligation and you should stand up for your rights.

What did your instinct tell you about your pregnancy, labour or birth?

🖤 How important are the right support people 🖤

The people backing you can make a huge difference to the outcome of your birth.

Everyone who is supporting you needs to trust the labour and birth process, especially your partner.

They need to have done their homework in preparing themselves for what to expect, what each stage of labour looks like & how they can be there for you.

🖤 You dont have to be a feminist to understand how important women's rights are in birth 🖤

This is a fundamental attitude which we all can benefit from, no matter who you are.

Society as a whole seem to be discussing more and more how getting birth' wrong' i.e. trauma, can impact not only on an individual but a whole family, network and community.

To start voicing our rights and opinions, whilst advocating for ourselves and others is a way to be heard and for change to matter.

🖤 What is “Fear-Tension-Pain” Syndrome and what effect does it have on your labour? 🖤

FTP Syndrome is the cycle you can be in during labour and birth.

This is when you have a fear relating to the experience of labour and birth, which then creates tension in the muscles of your body and not only inhibits your body’s natural pain relieving hormone ‘endorphins’ but also limits oxygen getting to your uterus.

The lack of oxygen inhibits your uterus to contract efficiently, which in turn creates pain within your body.

Once fear is created during birth, your body will start to produce catecholamine’s. This may create ‘failure to progress’ or prevent you from establishing labour.

🖤 I never new there was a word for this 🖤

I found this super interesting and the more I thought about it, the the more I could see that it happened to me, mainly towards the later weeks of my first pregnancy.

Every visit for me was about what would happen if I got to 42 weeks, the possibility of induction, or not having the home birth i desired.

Has this happened to you? Or do you know of it happening often?

💙 Yesterday, i became Aunty Em for the first time 💙

It took 2 1/2 years & a whole lot of love & sacrifice, but my brother & his partner had a baby, via surrogacy, in Canada, yesterday.

It was a long road but they got their. They have such a rock solid relationship & such huge hearts that simply wanted to be dads, you cant be anything less than proud & stoked for them.

There is so much to say about it all, but for now, YAY!

(If this or my own current pregnancy are things you want to hear more about, let me know & i can incorporate more of myself!)

It is so important that we are all advocating for the rights of women when it comes to childbirth.

It doesnt matter who you are, where you come from, or what you do....we are all in this together

🖤 What is the simple and fundamental end role of Adrenalin? 🖤

At the end of labour, Adrenalin is released to give you the energy and the strength to complete your birth and push your baby out.

Thanks you Adrenalin!

🖤 Trauma is trauma 🖤

Your birth trauma and my birth trauma and even the lovely mum in our mothers group's birth trauma are likely not the same...and that's ok!

We have all dreamed of giving birth a certain way - physiological, VBAC, homebirth, caesarean, birth-centre, medicalised, freebirth....

So not getting what we had imagined or planned for can be painful.

This pain can manifest days, weeks, months or years later. But it is not any less important and you are not any less alone as to when it occurs and why it occurred.

🖤 What are the benefits of skin to skin directly after birth? 🖤

There are so many benefits to both you & your bub.

For you -
⚫ giving you confidence
⚫ bonding between you both
⚫ releasing prolactin for breast milk supply
⚫ may help prevent post partum depression due to the oxytocin release
For your bub -
⚫ helping them transition & adapt to being earth side
⚫ regulate body temperature, HR & BP
⚫ help create optimal brain development
⚫ colonize their gut with your good bacteria

The breast crawl also often leads to easier feeing due to baby led attachment too.

🖤 This is why you must ask questions 🖤

When a medical professional tells you that you are 'at risk', you must know what 'risk' they are talking about.

Whilst every persons idea of each 'risk ' varies, having statistics, evidence based research and facts, will help you understand what possible 'risk' you face and allows you to make an informed decision about it.

No question is silly and all medical professionals should be happy to answer with no adversity.
