With emergency services still actively fighting fires, Victorians are urged to prepare for dangerous fire conditions for the rest of the week.

A Total Fire Ban will be in place tomorrow, Friday 9 January, with Catastrophic fire danger forecast for parts of the state.

These are the most dangerous conditions for fire. If a fire starts, it may spread quickly and be impossible to control, leaving lives and homes at risk.

How to prepare:

🌡️ Reduce heat stress
Wear light, loose clothing, drink plenty of water, and close windows and blinds early to keep heat out. More tips: www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/extreme-heat

🔥 Know your local risk
Check your Fire Danger Rating and understand what actions to take if a fire starts: www.cfa.vic.gov.au/fdr

📌 Stay informed
Monitor warnings at emergency.vic.gov.au, download the VicEmergency app, or call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.

📻 Don’t rely on one source
Listen to your local emergency broadcaster and check updates regularly.

And remember, you don’t need to live in the country to be at risk. Fire can impact urban, regional and rural communities alike.

Stay safe this bushfire season.

Severe to extreme heat will start across Victoria from today until Saturday. This will also mean increased fire risk, with Wimmera, South West and Central districts in Total Fire Ban with an Extreme Fire Danger Rating.

During today and the coming days, temperatures in the north of the state are expected to reach low to mid-40s, and high 30s to low 40s in the south.

Two Watch & Act warnings are currently in place for an active bushfire in Mt Lawson. Those in the area should monitor conditions and be ready to act, as the situation can change at any time.

🌡️ Stay cool by wearing light, loose clothing, drinking plenty of water and closing windows and blinds early to limit heat entering your home. For more info and resources: www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/extreme-heat

move with an instinctive lightness, gliding over the land in a way that leaves surprisingly delicate traces. Their paws are narrow and their gait is efficient, allowing them to conserve energy and stay silent while hunting or traveling long distances. Because they often place their back feet directly into the prints of their front feet—a movement called direct register—you sometimes see only two footprints instead of four. This creates a neat, almost ghostlike trail that seems to float across sand, soil, or scrub, a reminder of how effortlessly these wild animals belong to the landscape.
