Because they often place their back feet directly into the prints of their front feet—a movement called direct register—you sometimes see only two footprints instead of four. Standing on the edge of the Great Ocean Walk, I felt the raw meeting place of worlds—the restless Southern Ocean stretching endlessly to the horizon while the Bass Strait churned at my side. Wind whipped across the cliffs with a wild, ancient force, carrying the scent of salt and the distant cry of seabirds. Below, waves crashed like rolling thunder, shaping the rugged coastline with every surge. For a moment, it was just me, the cliffs, and the vast blue frontier—a reminder of how small we are, and how powerful nature can be.
