Here are some dentists’ tips for looking after your veneers:
🦷 Brush and floss twice a day because veneers are just as susceptible to plaque and bacteria build up as natural teeth.
🍭 Even though they are very durable, veneers can chip and break so be careful with particularly hard foods like raw carrots and hard lollies.
🍹 Drinking alcohol regularly can cause the bonding cement under your veneers to weaken, which can lead to corrosion, staining and damage. Therefore, dentists recommend limiting alcohol.
📩 Dentists can help remove plaque from the teeth which a toothbrush cannot, and professional cleaning can help polish and preserve the colour of your veneers over time.

Did you know untreated coeliac disease can cause damage to the tooth’s enamel? 🤕 This is especially the case for children and can also result in delayed dental development and additional cavities to both the baby and adult teeth. 🦷

People with coeliac disease also often have more frequent and severe outbreaks of canker sores, which is a small ulcer which develops in the mouth.

If you or your child has frequent canker sores, it is worth being tested. Your GP can refer you for a blood screening test, which is the first step toward diagnosis.

Looking after your toothbrush is almost as important as looking after our teeth! 🦷

We couldn’t keep our smile shining without our trusty toothbrush, so here are our tips for caring for the ultimate oral hygiene tool:
⭐ Store it in a specific toothbrush holder. Don’t use random household items. Toothbrush holders are designed to allow your toothbrush to dry properly after use.
⭐ Let your toothbrush air dry. If you put them in a cupboard or cover them, they may not have enough air to dry, which can cause more bacteria to grow on the bristles.
⭐ When travelling, buy a travel cap or portable holder to protect the toothbrush head from other items in your toiletries bag.
⭐ Replace your toothbrush every three months or once it looks worn.*

If you haven’t already made the switch, consider buying an electric toothbrush for a more thorough clean. It doesn’t have to be expensive; you can find a great electric toothbrush at your local supermarket!

You wouldn’t guess it, but saliva is one of the strongest natural defences against tooth decay! 💪 It washes out sugar from your mouth and into the stomach. Without saliva, the sugar would remain in your mouth and form acidic bacteria which can cause tooth decay and damage. 🤕

It’s just another reason to avoid having a dry mouth. Some things you can do to encourage saliva production are:
💧 Staying hydrated by drinking at least two litres of water each day.
🍬 Chewing sugar-free gum.
🦷 Keeping the rest of your mouth healthy with regular brushing and flossing.

If you have a constant dry mouth, we recommend seeing your dentist to find the cause.

The average adult has 32 teeth – some have more, and some have less – but each tooth in the human mouth has been shaped over time to respond to our needs as humans. And there’s a lot more to our teeth than we realise. 👀

Did you know our teeth are organs and have four layers?
1️⃣ Tooth pulp – the innermost layer of the tooth, containing nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues.
2️⃣ Cementum – covers your tooth root and helps anchor your tooth to your jaw.
3️⃣ Dentin – underneath the enamel is a thin layer of dentin which is not as strong as enamel and if exposed can increase the risk of cavities.
4️⃣ Enamel – the outer protective layer which is the hardest substance in the human body.*

All your teeth work together to cut, tear, mix and grind ⚒️ your food into smaller pieces, which is why we need to protect them all. Each plays an important part in our overall health – just another reason to prioritise our oral hygiene habits and keep our smiles healthy! 💛

Our tongue is one of the biggest multi-taskers in our body – it helps us eat, speak, swallow and taste. 👅

It can also be home to bacteria and microorganisms, which can sometimes cause bad breath and other oral conditions.

So, should you clean your tongue? Well, the simple answer is: it’s up to you. Research has found no evidence that cleaning the tongue is effective for managing the cause of bad breath. 👀

So if you feel like cleaning your tongue, it certainly isn’t going to cause any damage; but we just aren’t sure yet whether there’s any added benefit.

There’s nothing more exciting than your child finishing up their teething journey. For some kids, teething causes minimal discomfort, but for others teething can impact their diet, sleep and overall mood. Seeing those two-year-old-molars finally break through is a huge milestone! 💛

It’s also the time to make sure you’ve taken them to the dentist! We recommend all children see the dentist at least once before their second birthday.

The appointment will be very casual and will allow your child to become familiar with the dentist, and check for any early detection of tooth decay or dental conditions.

It’s common for young children to feel apprehensive about going to the dentist, so here are some things you can do to prepare them for their first visit:
👉 Practice playing dentist at home. Role play is incredible for children’s imaginations and exploration. If they feel comfortable role playing, they might feel more relaxed when it comes to a real dental visit.
👉 Talk about the good things which come from visiting the dentist, like counting teeth and learning how to care for them.

Remember, starting dental hygiene habits young is important for creating a healthy smile which lasts a lifetime. 🌟

Did you know your teeth can press down with a force equivalent to 75 kg! That might be heavier than you are!

A study of 142 dental students found that they had a mean bite force of 738 Newtons, which equates to 75 kg.

However, despite their strength, your teeth are susceptible to damage from acids and decay.

And while you can’t take your teeth to the gym for a workout, there are things you can do to keep them in great shape, like:
🦷 Brushing and flossing twice a day.
🚰 Drinking at least 2 litres of water a day.
✨ Investing in a good tooth mousse to complement your brushing and flossing.
📆 Keeping your regular date with the dentist.

Sugar and starches are your teeth’s worst enemies so keep them strong with good oral hygiene habits!
