At 21, I started my own consulting firm. But at 19, I was working for an optometrist, making $7.25 an hour. [Hello 2002 in the USA!]

I had a clear goal: I wanted to buy a home. But I knew a bank wasn't going to look twice at a $7.25 hourly wage. So, I took on a second job transcribing medical files—the old-school way, with the little foot pedal and headphones. [IYKYK]

Eventually, that clinician saw how I was running his operations and offered me a role. Instead of a lateral move, I reached for the moon and asked for $12 an hour. Within a couple of years, other practices were calling the clinic asking, “Can she do for us what she did for you?”

The Forensic and Clinical Psychologist and his Private University Professor wife sat me down—I thought I was in trouble! Instead, they told me I had built a name for myself and mentored me into starting my own business.

The coaching and strategy world looks very polished today, often driven by quick frameworks and instant gratification. But the best wisdom comes from proving yourself in the trenches, step by step.

No matter where you are starting today, keep your eyes on the moon. Your ex*****on speaks so loud. And small business owners are the heartbeat of our communities and will do everything in their power to support you.

Tonight we have our grand awards ceremony [Thanks to and Karen M. our category sponsor] where one person will walk away with the title of Business Coach of the Year and honestly, regardless of our starting positions or final accolades - I have no doubt that , Jaya Mcintyre, Diane Mckendrick, Sasha Eburne. , Kate Langford and I will keep doing the phenomenal work we've dedicated our careers to. Here's to all of us!

Pushing through is not a strategy.

Read that again.

We’ve all built up a magnificent facade. Because we are driven, ambitious business owners, we know exactly how to mask our exhaustion, show up to a meeting, and pull off being our "best self."

But at what cost?

Karen M. from [ and presenter and sponsor for Coach of the Year - 2026] and I were chatting about the reality of neurodivergence and business management. She shared that she recently looked at her packed schedule and cancelled three things she had opted into. Her reason? Pushing through meant she’d need three days of recovery afterward.

Saying, "I just can’t do today," is a massive business win. It’s prioritizing sustainability over a temporary performance.

The next time you're tempted to force your way through burnout, ask yourself: What is the recovery cost on the back end of this?

May is always interesting in private practice.

The adrenaline of January is gone.

The Easter disruption has happened.

The reality of the year starts settling in.

And this is usually where I start hearing:
➡️ “The diaries feel weird.”
➡️“Clients are rescheduling more.”
➡️“The team feels flat.”
➡️ I think we need more referrals.”

Maybe.

But more referrals won’t fix:

• poor attendance expectations
• unclear client journeys
• admin burnout
• clinicians avoiding difficult conversations
• systems that only work when everyone has capacity.

This is the season for recalibration. Not panic.
Sometimes the most profitable thing you can do is stop, zoom out, and actually look at what’s happening underneath the numbers.
That’s the work we do inside Private Practice Alliance.
Less chaos.
More clarity.
Better systems for real humans.

✨ Comment “MAY” if your practice feels a little off right now.

You don't have to stay in the horror show.

There's a membership built for exactly this: community, accountability, monthly masterclasses, templates, and a mentor who actually knows private practice.

No more chaos. No more spot fires. No more doing it alone.

Celebrating the "Low-Bar" Wins (Glimmers)

Not every business win needs to be a multi-six-figure month or a massive scaling milestone.

During my chat with Karen Moloney, I shared a little tradition I have with my clients. When we are in a session, I listen out for the "minutia"—the tiny, beautiful moments where things just worked. I write them down on old-fashioned postcards and mail them out as "Glimmer Cards."

What qualifies as a glimmer? Karen M. and I had a chat about how you know you've made an impact in someone's business and I said, honestly, it's the tiny moments that make me the most proud. Little Glimmers or low bar wins that is often overlooked. So here's your chance; what's your glimmer today?

Having your tea or coffee in peace while your kid gets ready for school without anyone feeling rushed.

Choosing to fold the laundry or chase your toddler around with your headphones in during a meeting because that’s just what needs to happen today.

Keeping your houseplants alive for another week (even if you just have to shout kind words at them so they forgive you for forgetting to water them).

Revenue and profit goals are great, but the glimmers are what actually keep us functioning.

What’s one tiny "low-bar win" you’re celebrating today? Drop a glimmer below! ✨

“You know what’s exhausting?”

Feeling like you have to hold it all together all the time.

The strong one.
The capable one.
The one everyone leans on.

Meanwhile… you’re quietly running on empty.

Our perspective? 👇

Strength isn’t pretending you’re okay when you’re not.

Strength is:
✨ asking for support
✨ setting boundaries without guilt
✨ trusting yourself again
✨ choosing growth even when it feels uncomfortable

Because empowerment doesn’t always look loud.

Sometimes it looks like:
Saying no.
Resting.
Backing yourself.
Having the hard conversation.
Finally putting yourself on your own priority list.

And I fundamentally believe that kind of growth changes everything.

Not overnight.
But one honest decision at a time.

What’s one thing you’re learning to give yourself permission for lately?

I’m thinking of starting a podcast called "Someone Said I Should." 🎙️

It would be entirely dedicated to all the times we’ve taken "expert" business advice, only for it to be completely wrong for our lives, our brains, and our goals.

Take email scheduling, for example. "Someone said I shouldn't send emails at 3:00 AM." But what if 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM is when you do your absolute best, most uninterrupted thinking?

The solution isn't to force yourself into a traditional 9-to-5 box. It’s to write the email when your brain is firing, hit "schedule" for 8:00 AM so the world gets it at a standard time, and go back to sleep guilt-free.

Stop "should-ing" all over your business. If a strategy doesn't feel true to your integrity, it’s okay to hit delete.

I've tagged the Beam Awards business of the year coaches for some of their best "should" stories. Blue Bean Media [Award Sponsor], Brett D. Scott, Jaya McIntyre, Diane Mckendrick, Sasha Eburne, Danni Vee and Kate Langford

What’s the worst "someone said I should" advice you’ve ever received? Let’s laugh [or cry] about it in the comments. 👇

Private practice ownership can feel lonely.

Even when you’re surrounded by so. many. people.

Even when things “look” successful from the outside.

Because behind the scenes?

There’s still the decision-making.

The “I should probably do this” thoughts.

The leadership.

The growth pressure.

The constant figuring-it-out.

That’s why we built Practice to Profit 💥

A membership designed to help private practice owners create sustainable growth through:
✨ community connection
✨ micro trainings
✨ practical processes
✨ support for not just you — but your whole team

Because business should feel supported.

Not survival-mode-ish.

Ready to build smarter, not heavier? 👀
