Vale Dianne Mitchell
With sadness acknowledging the passing of Dianne Mitchell, a regular Saturday morning student at Doutta Galla Yoga Studio. Dianne began her Yoga journey over 20 years ago at St Kilda Yoga Studio. She went on to do Teacher Training with Simon Marrocco, and became a certified teacher in 2013. Due to being a ‘travelling’ Barrister she had little time for a full teaching load
and would mainly do fill-in classes. Dianne was a dedicated student/teacher and her kind and friendly presence will be missed.

Today is birthday of Shri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (November 18, 1888 – February 28, 1989); one of the most influential yoga teacher, ayurvedic healer and scholar who is credited with revival and renewal of HathaYoga not only as spiritual (which is always maintained as supreme) but also as physical and therapeutic practice based on the Yoga Sutras and other classical yoga texts.

Shri Krishnamacharya was adept in all the six Vedic darśanas, or Indian philosophies. Under the patronage of the King of Mysore, Krishna Raja Wodiyar IV, Shri Krishnamacharya traveled around India giving lectures and demonstrations to promote yoga, including such feats as apparently stopping his heartbeat. His most basic concept of teachings was the principle "Teach what is appropriate for an individual." While he is revered in other parts of the world as a Yogacharya, in India Krishnamacharya is also known as a healer who drew from both ayurvedic and yogic traditions. He authored four books on yoga—Yoga Makaranda (1934), Yogaasanagalu (c. 1941), Yoga Rahasya, and Yogavalli (Chapter 1 – 1988)—as well as several essays and poetic compositions.

Shri Krishnamacharya's students included many of yoga's most renowned and influential teachers: BKS Iyengar (1918-2014); K. Pattabhi Jois (1915–2009); Indra Devi (1899–2002); his son T. K. V. Desikachar (1938-2016); Srivatsa Ramaswami (born 1939); and A. G. Mohan (born 1945). He and his students have some influence on most of the ways we practice HathaYoga today.
