Sleep hygiene is about developing healthy sleep habits to benefit the quality & quantity of your sleep. Here are 10 tips for improving your sleep hygiene:

1. Consistency is key! 🗓️ This means going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday, even on weekends. Sleep schedule variability has been associated with adverse health outcomes impacting brain 🧠, heart ❤️, & bone health 🦴, as well as lower physical activity & sedentary behaviour. 🚴‍♂️

2. Adults should aim for about 7-9 hours sleep per night, although some people may find they need more or less. 😴 Adolescents & kids need even more to support their development.

3. Your sleeping environment should be comfortable & free from distractions. 🌃🌙 Try a dark, cool room!

4. Eat dinner a few hours before bedtime to allow for proper digestion of your food. 🍲

5. Daily sunlight exposure is important for regulating your circadian rhythm & improving sleep quality. ☀️ Try to seek the sun first thing in the morning before reaching for your phone.📱

6. Avoid screen time at least 1 hour before bed. 📵 Screens stimulate alertness due to activation of your sympathetic nervous system (AKA “fight or flight” system). 🎮📺 This makes it harder to switch off for bedtime.

7. Regular exercise has so many health benefits including improving sleep quality & duration. 🏃‍♀️ It has also been shown to positively impact those with sleeping disorders such as insomnia. 🥱

8. Caffeine is a stimulant, so try avoiding it after midday. ⚡️ This includes things like coffee, caffeinated teas (including green) & energy drinks. ☕️🫖

9. I regularly talk about good sleeping postures as a chiropractor. This includes having appropriate pillows & mattresses. 🛌

10. Long term alcohol consumption & smoking are both linked to the development of sleeping problems such as insomnia & sleep apnea.🍹🍺🚬

Sleep hygiene looks different for everyone, so give these tips a try to figure out what helps you most. 🙌
