Module 1 starts with Buber’s powerful book I and Thou (1923) and the contribution of dialogue and communication in the development of various therapeutic models. Especially the importance of family and couples therapy impacted by traumas from wars in Europe & the Pacific, the partitioning of India, the creation of Israel within the Middle East and currently the invasion of Ukraine. The decades following focused on the need for relationships between couples to help heal the individual.

Counselling and the Epidemic of Sexual Abuse in our Communities

The extent of sexual assault and abuse within our community has been high in the last decades and is now more apparent with the various Royal Commission and social movements, most recently being the movement. Usually, the proportion of people seeking help from counsellors have higher levels of abuse in their lives and it is in this regard that the responsibility is with the counsellor to have the skills and expertise to work therapeutically well with these people. This training will outline the issues and dynamics that are important in counselling those with an abuse history.
