It's autumn now in Melbourne. I must admit I have been a bit sad about farewelling our beautiful hot summer. It's so easy to get motivated to go open water swimming or to do outdoor yoga when its warmer. So it's been a real mindset change to welcome autumn. This week, we have a full week of 20 degree days instead of the 30s or 40s, which is typical of summer in Melbourne.
So if you are like me and struggle with motivation during colder months, here are my tips for keeping fit in autumn:
πŸ‚ wear a wet suit if swimming in open water / sea
πŸ‚ choose yoga asanas and pranayama which are warming eg sun salutations and kapalbhati (breath of fire)
πŸ‚ take extra warm and snuggly clothes to wear and/or get changed into. No fashionable clothes are needed!
πŸ‚ ugg boots are great
πŸ‚ take a Thermos of warm drinks with you
πŸ‚ use fresh ginger and other warming spices in meals and drinks
πŸ‚ just think there are many colder places than here
πŸ‚have fun, and remember your endorphins are about to kick in!!!

We all experience change in our lives. Initially, it can feel daunting and a bit scary, but if we don't welcome change, life can also feel a bit mundane and predictable. To help with these big feelings, I feel reassured when I realise that we are always able to tap into inner peace. Or, in my case, a seaside inner peace. This week I finished up with my job of 20 years. The beach, swimming and yoga were my best friends. I am now looking forward to new and exciting possibilities. And if not, I have this to keep me happy.

With so much harm and violence being shown to others throughout the world, we must try to keep our own hearts 'open' and continue to show kindness to others. This is often easier said than done, as we can all have triggers with big emotions. But if we can keep ourselves in check and have awareness of this, we can be bigger and stronger by showing love and kindness to others.

This is important because it allows us to stay connected to our own inner kindness and expressions of love.

Happy New Year! I have kicked off the new year with some beach yoga followed by a swim at Aspendale Beach. What a way to start the day. The location may not be as impressive as the island of Korćula Croatia shown in the photo, but it will be just as athletic, energising, and immune boosting. Best of all, it's free and accessible. Wide leg child's pose or Balasana, is even better with my little girl as I can gently fold myself over the top of her and relax my back. Done gently and with her permission !
This is helpful for me when I am feeling a bit stiff in my back or hips and need a gentle variation of Balasana. Of course if you don't have a keen child then the next best thing is a big cushion. This way you can really settle into the pose and let go of any tightness or resistance you may have in your body.
Some benefits of this pose are:
πŸ€ Opening your hips
πŸ€ Lengthening your spine
πŸ€ Stretching out your ankles πŸ€ Relaxing your back muscles
πŸ€ Relieving any tension in your pelvis
πŸ€ Increasing blood flow to your head and neck
πŸ€ Stimulating your digestive system
Take care or seek medical advise if you have: Knee injuries, are pregnant, have low blood pressure, Ear or eye injuries
Mentally, this grounding pose (connecting to the ground) is a great way to let go of worries, rest, relax, and rejuvenate to provide relief from stress, anxiety, and fatigue. Emotionally, this pose is a great way to connect with your inner child and foster a sense of calm, comfort, contentment, and safety.πŸ’šβ€οΈβ™₯οΈπŸ’œ

Taking a swim can be more than just 'exercise'. I have been swimming most mornings and evenings in the beautiful, clear waters of Dalmatia (coastal Croatia) and it has been very therapeutic to my mental health and happiness, not to mention giving me a whole body workout. It has been something that I turn to to help with anxiety and dealing with panic attacks. Feeling great can be addictive and I love it. ❀️

Viparita Karani or legs-up- the- wall has incredible health benefits, and it's so easy to do. The pose inverts the body without straining the head or neck. It provides a gentle neck, hamstring and hip stretch and is great for people with:
πŸ€ Low blood pressure
πŸ€ Edema or swelling of the legs, ankles but also abdomen and arms
πŸ€ Chronic venous insufficiency, including various stages of this;
πŸ€ Spider veins
πŸ€ Varicose veins
πŸ€ Edema (swelling)
πŸ€ Skin changes ( eg red or darker patches)
πŸ€ Venous Ulcer.
This pose is also excellent for mental heath and reducing stress and anxiety.
It is especially easy for beginners.
