I Have Something to Say

I Have Something to Say I Have Something to Say is run by Alison Moorcroft, who firmly believes that everyone does in fact have something to say.

Alison has developed a small speech pathology practice located on the Northside of Brisbane, and focuses specifically on supporting the communication and feeding development of children and adults with disabilities. Family goals are achieved by visiting each client where they feel most comfortable (e.g. home, childcare, the shops, your local park) and working closely with the people who are most important to them.

Yet another ‘journalist’ adding to community misunderstanding of the NDIS 🙄 People who have physical, intellectual, or sensory disabilities are PEOPLE who deserve to spend their own money to get a haircut, go to the movies, or do whatever else they want with their day. Yes, maybe they need support to do these things, which is all that the NDIS is funding. Would tax payers prefer their families to quit work to take them instead? Or are people with disabilities just meant to stay at home, out of sight and out of mind? 😡

It’s important that AAC systems contain single words, access to literacy, AND a selection of pre-stored phrases for fast use. Here are some good ones you could add!

Communication is power. ⚡ Pre-stored self-advocacy messages help AAC users to clarify, correct, request, and stand up for themselves in real time. Because their voice matters — always.

This looks like a great opportunity for free support for families!

Researchers at The University of Queensland are conducting a trial of an online parenting support program for families of children diagnosed with any neurodevelopmental disability or developmental delay. All participating families receive PACT Online.

I’m not so sure about saying this is an autistic Barbie when autism can look many different ways (or be not visible at all). I do however LOVE seeing a mainstream doll with adaptive tools that so many people utilise. There have been doll sized AAC toys available for a while now within this disability community, but a legit Barbie with AAC on toy shop shelves is a massive win!

Did anyone catch this episode of Grey’s Anatomy last week? I love that it depicted an AAC user and highlighted why AAC systems should be out and with the user not tucked away ‘safely’ in their bag.

Unfortunately a ‘journalist’ wrote an article in the Financial Review saying that speech pathology (and other therapies) aren’t evidence-based and that we are essentially tutors claiming to know more so than we can rort the system and take money from the NDIS. My four year undergrad degree then three year PhD beg to differ. Maybe they should have checked their own evidence before spreading damaging misinformation!! 😡

Australia is pumping infinite money into supply-constrained markets such as disability and childcare, while the government also mandates and helps fund hefty wage increases in these sectors.

I’m always on the hunt to find new and engaging resources so was excited to come across these alphabet sand moulds at Kmart! I can see them being a fun ‘sensory pencil’ for early literacy learners and an engaging activity for clients who love to use and talk about the alphabet. If only they came in lower case too!
