Sometimes our minds learned to step away because staying present wasn’t safe. Dissociation isn’t the enemy, it’s a message from a time when your body and mind did exactly what they needed to survive. When it happens now, it’s an invitation to slow down, to listen, and to offer yourself the gentleness that wasn’t possible then.

The 4th of September is World S*xual Health Day 2025.

This year’s theme: S*xual Justice – What Can We Do?

S*xual justice is about equal rights to safety, pleasure, and informed choice. Women, men, and gender diverse people all deserve full autonomy over their bodies and relationships.

Too often, disabled, neurodivergent, and culturally diverse voices are missing from these conversations. Real sexual justice means respecting different communication styles and giving people the time and space they need to be heard.

S*xual justice asks us to centre the voices most often excluded. Listening, reading, and watching are simple but powerful steps we can take. Here are some places to start learning directly from communities. Any others you’d recommend?

Have you or a loved one experienced medical gaslighting? Medical gaslighting can significantly affect your mental health and delay much needed treatment options.

It may also lead to:
Increased anxiety - constantly doubting your health and the validity of your symptoms.
Lowered self-esteem - Feeling invalidated or misunderstood can erode self-confidence and create a sense of powerlessness.
Chronic stress - Ongoing frustration and the feeling of not being heard can lead to long-term stress and mental strain.
Depression - Persistent disregard for your health concerns can lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression.

Let's talk about PMDD - Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is a severe form of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) affecting 3 - 8 % of people with periods. It involves emotional and physical symptoms that disrupt daily life. PMDD isn't believed to be caused by a hormonal imbalance. Researchers think PMDD may be triggered by the hormonal changes in the part of the menstrual cycle between ovulation and menstruation (luteal phase).

Some of the risk factors include...
Hormonal changes: studies show that those with PMDD are very sensitive to hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle.
Serotonin deficiency: serotonin is the brain hormone that controls your mood and makes you feel happy.
Genetics: having a close relative with PMDD may raise your risk.
Mood disorders: if you or a family member has depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders, you may be more likely to experience PMDD.
Smoking: while the evidence is weak, smoking could be a risk factor for PMDD.
Early childhood trauma: research suggests that 83% of Australians with PMDD had experienced trauma early in life. People with PMDD are more likely to have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional abuse or neglect in their past compared to the general population.
Gender dysphoria: women who experience gender dysphoria are also at a higher risk of PMDD.
