Learn Auslan: Introductory Online Courses Now Available!

New courses commencing Term Two

*$35 per person per week across the eight week duration of the course

*Minimum of 2 and maximum of 5 participants per class, ensuring greater individualised attention

*Highly suitable for those with no existing knowledge of Auslan.

Did you know?

• In Australia there are currently 3.6 million people with a hearing condition, which is expected to increase to 7.8 million people in 2060.
• Access to Auslan is vital in supporting children and adults to get an education or find work, to increase social and emotional wellbeing, and prevent social isolation.
• 9 out of 10 deaf children are born to hearing parents. Learning Auslan as soon as possible has demonstrated better outcomes for deaf children.
• Tellingly, Department of Education NSW has introduced Auslan as an additional language and Victoria is now following suit as interest in its benefits grows exponentially.
• Auslan support can now be accessed through NDIS.

What We Offer

• Meaningful eight-week online courses of one hour per week for adults and 30 minutes per week for children with extensive follow-up resources and activities across the school term.

• Course informed by the Auslan Vic and Australian Curriculum study designs.

• A maximum of five participants per session at any one time, ensuring individual attention across the length of your course.

• A host of post-course resources provided for participants to draw from.

• An interactive practitioner (not a recording). A highly qualified, passionate, experienced and with strong ties to the deaf community. Adept at identifying individual student needs, from those who are keen to consolidate fundamental concepts to those wishing to stretch themselves.

• On-line follow up with all participants beyond the eight-week period of the course.

• Advanced courses also available throughout the year to solidify and extend existing knowledge.

The Benefits of Learning Auslan

Learning Auslan, Australian Sign Language and the native language of the Australian Deaf Community, has many benefits for Deaf, deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children and adults alike.
Learning a new language increases memory retention and stimulates brain development. Through learning a visual-spatial language, literacy, numeracy, and motion processing skills can increase in both hearing and deaf children. Kinetic and visual learners, utilising a multimodal approach, will often see an increase in not only memory, but cognitive and language development as well.

Research has shown that learning a visual language can stimulate neural pathways which increases mental flexibility and brain development. As Auslan grammar is different to English, children and adults increase their understanding of how languages operate.
For children and adults who are Deaf, deaf, or hard of hearing, or for people with a disability or disorder, Auslan can increase their capacity to engage in social interaction. Coupled with this, people who are hearing can learn Auslan to communicate and support members of the wider deaf community or deaf family members.
