It's the start of a new school term - How can parents help their children achieve their best ? Here are some top tips to help:

✅ Be positive and enthusiastic about the start of school - This can help your child feel the same way.

✅ Be prepared - Make sure your child has all the things they need (books, uniform, stationary etc).

✅ Healthy routines - Focusing on a healthy diet, lots of exercise and getting enough sleep can make a big difference.

✅ Fresh start - Encourage or help your child to tidy and organise their bedroom and desk.

✅ Prepare for stress - Explain that stress is a normal part of life but that the good news is that taking action (such as the tips above) can help to strengthen their resilience and improve how they handle the pressures at school.

About 1 in 5 Australians are living with chronic pain, including children and adolescents. People living with chronic pain are twice as likely to experience challenges with their mental health and often face stigma and isolation.

This year’s theme - "Pain colours your world, and your pain colours our world", aims to bring greater awareness to difficulties experienced by people living with chronic pain and how these problems colour their world and the world around them.

Experts agree that chronic pain is “100% of the time produced by the brain” and often involves changes in attentional mechanisms and pain sensitivity. Research has shown it’s possible to reduce chronic pain using targeted brain-based therapies. Chess dates back over 1,500 years, evolving from early strategic games played in India and Persia. The version we know today began to take shape in Europe during the 15th century, and International Chess Day was formally recognised by The United Nations General Assembly in 2019. Since then, it has become a global event supported by schools, clubs, and cultural organisations worldwide.

International Chess Day serves as a worldwide celebration of the game of chess, highlighting its contributions to mental development, cultural exchange, and peaceful competition.

Chess is more than just a game: It’s a universal language of logic, strategy, and patience. It builds cognitive skills such as attention, decision-making and problem-solving. Who wouldn’t want to boost these skills ?

Perhaps consider:

🤓 Playing a game of chess online or with friends and family.
🤓 Introducing someone new to the basics of chess and help them get started.
🤓 Joining a local chess club.

So get involved - Have fun and boost your brain !

Dark chocolate contains powerful antioxidants (flavonols) that can fight inflammation and protect against cell damage. Research has shown that dark chocolate can help to improve:

⛹🏻‍♀️ Athletic Performance: The antioxidants in dark chocolate increase the production of nitric oxide in the blood, which supports circulation and reduces the amount of oxygen an athlete uses while engaged in moderately intense exercise. This allows athletes to maintain workout intensity for longer.

🧠 Brain Function: The antioxidants in dark chocolate increase blood flow to the brain, helping to boost cognitive functions such as attention and memory.

🫀Heart Health: The antioxidants in dark chocolate have been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of clotting, lowering the risks of stroke, coronary heart disease and death from heart disease.

Remember that most of the benefits seen in research are associated with chocolate that has at least a 70% cacao content !

2025 is the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, and the theme this year is ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’, which celebrates the achievements of the past and a bright future ahead.

NAIDOC Week is important because it’s an opportunity for learning, connection and community. It provides First Nations people and non-Indigenous people the opportunity to celebrate and connect with community and Country. And it’s a chance for everyone, not just First Nations people, to celebrate all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.

The school holidays provide the perfect opportunity for children to relax and recharge after a busy term. Holidays can sometimes bring their own set of challenges too, so here are 4 practical tips to help children and parents get the best out of this time and set the stage for a great start to the next term:

⏰ Maintain a simple routine: Keeping a regular schedule for things such as bedtime and mealtimes can help to keep life easier and the holidays to run smoothly.
🧑‍💻 Encourage screen-free play: Helping your children find other ways to spend their time such as outside nature play or inside activities such as cooking or craft can help boost creativity and mood.
🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️ Exercise: Remember children need at least 1 hour every day of moderate to vigorous exercise to help their body and brain to work at their best, so build some regular exercise into every day.
👯 Friends: Research shows that friendships are important for helping to buffer us from the effects of stress, so remember to set up some playdates if you can.
