It’s RU OK day and rather than asking people just when they don’t look themselves, maybe ask and provide help when they are experiencing things in the workplace that might make them slide down that slippery slope.

This piece is supposedly written my Anthony Hopkins. I don’t know how true that is but I love the messages and think we all need to take some time to reflect on this.

Asking for help isn’t giving up, it’s refusing to give up. It’s knowing that it’s important enough to enlist all the support you can muster because it matters, because you matter, for them and for you.

I love this phrase. I can’t remember who said it but it’s a great reminder that we shouldn’t limit our perspectives and therefore new experiences, based on a fixed belief.

It’s liberating to not be trapped in the ridiculous pursuit of perfection.

Gosh life can get messy and when this happens, it’s so easy to be overwhelmed. Where do you start? What do you do? We find that a good way to ground yourself is through a reminder of your purpose and also knowing your strengths. It was nice to see the intensity of thinking that participants displayed on the training last week. It’s awesome when we remember our character strengths when the going gets tough.

What if we saw happiness differently? Like something more real, achievable and sustainable? Rather than seeing happiness as the way a dictionary defines it (a state of pleasure and contentment, which is an ever moving beast), we can choose to see it as being on the journey towards our objectives and purpose in life. And with this, comes pleasure and pain. Both of which are necessary, in the same way that it takes both sunshine and rain to make a rainbow.

Thanks Dr Russ Harris.

People who know me know I'm a fan of podcasts and my new favourite is the excellent and much needed Psych Health and Safety Podcast from FlourishDx. Needless to say, I was a little stoked to be asked to contribute next week on episode #9. Listen and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts. Thank you to Jason van Schie and Joelle Mitchell for having me on and allowing me to share my perspectives on psychological health and safety in the FIFO industry.

Yesterday I had the privilege of presenting at the Women in Mining and Resources Leaders Summit on preventative mental health initiatives that extend beyond R U ok day and training. It’s all about focussing on workplace factors that prevent people from getting harmed in the first place. It’s called risks. This is the bread and butter of organisational psychologists. We focus on the organisation, team and individual levels and the integration of all three. If you’re interested to know more, let’s do coffee. 2021 is looking pretty clear for a few soy flat whites although I’m quite liking oat milk too.

Picture: Of the event but that’s not me at the front, because I’m taking the picture, at the back 😳
