I’m calling bu****it on the perimenopause narrative.
Perimenopause is the new health buzzword.
It's blamed for everything from waves of internal heat and anxiety, to weight gain and global warming.
It's seen as the evil instigator of digestive symptoms, brain fog, energy slumps, sleep disturbance, mental health issues, hot flushes, moodiness, weight gain, muscle loss, unexplained pains, musculoskeletal injuries, arthritis, osteoporosis, immune issues, bloating, irregular periods, night sweats, depression, and feeling like you're "not yourself".
Well, maybe not global warming.
It's described as starting in a woman's mid-40's, and sometimes the early to mid-30's, and lasting for 3-4 years or up to a decade, and sometimes lasting right up until the mid-50's or later.
Which basically means any symptom between the ages of 30 to 60 can be blamed on perimenopause.
Or that old chestnut: it's just your age.
I'm calling bu****it.
Not on the symptoms. They're 100% real and extremely incapacitating.
I'm calling bu****it on the narrative that perimenopause is the cause, and you are the helpless victim of your age.
And the only answer is medication.
Perimenopause isn't the cause of these symptoms.
It's the time in your life that you experience them. "Peri" meaning around or near, and "menopause" meaning the specific point in time that is 12 months after your last menstrual period.
Yes, menopause happens on a specific day. Not over the span of 30 years. Perimenopause is really just the time immediately adjacent to that.
But your hormones change and that's what causes the symptoms, right? Nope.
Your hormones are also not the cause of these symptoms.
Yes, sometimes your hormones will show changes on blood tests at this time, and this can lead to your body experiencing symptoms. But the hormone changes are also a symptom, not the cause.
Perimenopause and your hormones are not the root cause of these symptoms.
And if you only treat the symptoms instead of addressing the root cause, you'll still have the underlying problem.
It will show up in new and exciting ways (eg. more symptoms, other health conditions, autoimmune conditions, mental health conditions, chronic fatigue etc).
So what is the real root cause of perimenopause symptoms?
I'll be giving a free training this week in my Facebook group, Medical Intuition In Action, on exactly this topic.
