Message from the TGA regarding Pholcodine cough medicines.

Pholcodine-containing medicines, such as cough syrups, oral solutions and lozenges, have now been cancelled and can no longer be sold in Australia. Consumers are reminded to check their medicine cupboards for any of these products and discard them safely.

If you’re undergoing general anaesthesia and may have taken pholcodine in the past 12 months, tell your health professional prior to the procedure.

From 1st January 2023, general patient medicines with a PBS dispensed price between $30 and $45.60 will be reduced to $30 or even less with certain medicines. Pensioners and Concessional Card holders will still benefit from the current reduction to the PBS Safety Net which was lowered by 12 prescriptions this year to $244.80. Once reached their PBS scripts will remain free for the remainder of the year.
