Did you know that the Q angle (quadriceps angle) plays a significant role in knee health?

- The Q angle is formed between a line representing the resultant line of force of the quadriceps, (connecting a point near the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the mid-point of the patella) and a line from the center of the patella to the center of the tibial tubercle.

- Normal Q angle for males: Approximately 10-14 degrees
Normal Q angle for females: Approximately 15-17 degrees

- This angle, which measures the alignment of the knee joint, is generally wider in females than males. A wider Q angle in females can make them more prone to knee problems, such as genu valgus (knock knees) or genu varum (bow legs). These conditions can lead to joint stress, discomfort, and even injury over time.

Q angle is wider in females than males, Why??

- In females, the pelvis is broader to accommodate childbirth, causing the femurs to angle inward more, resulting in a larger Q angle. In males, the pelvis is narrower, and the femurs typically have a straighter alignment, leading to a smaller Q angle.

How does physiotherapy help manage issues related to the Q angle and knee pain?

- Physiotherapy helps by strengthening muscles around the knee, improving alignment, and reducing pain through targeted exercises, stretching, and manual therapy. It also educates on proper movement patterns to prevent injury.

What is Knee Osteoarthritis??

OA, often referred to as degenerative joint disease (DJD), is the most common disease affecting weight-bearing joints.
Articular cartilage destruction typically is more apparent on the medial than the lateral aspect of the knee
- One-third of individuals older than age 65 have radi-ographic evidence of OA.
- Pain, muscle weakness, medial joint laxity, and limitation of joint motion affect function and lead to disability. Deformity such as genu varum commonly develops in the knees. Knee instability ( the sensation of buckling or shifting) is also frequently reported by individuals with knee OA and significantly contributes to impaired physical function.

Risk Factors:

Age: The risk of OA increases with age.
Weight: Being overweight or obese puts extra stress on the knees.
Injury: A single severe injury or repeated injuries can increase the risk of OA.
Repetitive motion: Jobs or sports that involve repetitive motions can increase the risk.
Genetics: Some people inherit a tendency to develop OA.
Other health conditions: People with diabetes, high cholesterol, or hemochromatosis are more likely to develop OA.
S*x: Postmenopausal women are more likely to develop OA than men.
Developmental abnormalities: Deformities like knock knee or bowleg can increase stress on the knee.

How physiotherapy helps treat Osteoarthritis?
Physiotherapy helps treat knee osteoarthritis (OA) by focusing on strengthening the muscles around the knee joint, improving joint alignment, increasing flexibility, and teaching patients how to manage their pain through tailored exercise programs, manual therapy techniques, and education on activity modifications, ultimately allowing for better mobility and reduced pain in daily activities.

# Pregnancy facts

Did you know that fetal urine makes up a significant portion of amniotic fluid?

The fetal urine produced in the womb serves several important functions, and here's what happens to it:

1. Excreted into the Amniotic Sac:
Once the baby's kidneys start functioning around the second trimester, the urine is excreted into the amniotic sac, which surrounds the baby.
The amniotic fluid, which is mostly made up of water, electrolytes, and other substances, mixes with this urine.
2. Part of Amniotic Fluid:
Fetal urine becomes a major component of the amniotic fluid. As the baby continues to produce urine, it contributes to the volume and consistency of the amniotic fluid, which is crucial for the baby's development.
3. Recycled:
The baby continuously swallows the amniotic fluid, which contains fetal urine. The fluid is absorbed through the baby’s digestive system.
Once absorbed, it eventually passes through the baby's kidneys again, where it is filtered, and the process repeats itself. This cycle helps maintain the balance of amniotic fluid.
4. Eventually Excreted as Waste:
Waste products from the urine, such as urea, creatinine, and uric acid, are filtered and excreted into the amniotic sac.
5. Role in Amniotic Fluid Volume:
The volume of amniotic fluid is regulated by the amount of fetal urine, as well as the fluid absorbed by the baby and the fluid secreted by the placenta and the amniotic sac.

How to improve posture while working ???

Top of the monitor screen should be at eye level. Use a monitor stand if needed.
β€’ Monitor should be an arm's length away.
β€’ Your back should rest against the back of your chair or a backrest.
β€’ Take a 10 minute break every hour and get up and move.
β€’ Position your keyboard 4-6 inches away from the edge of your desk so your wrists have a place to rest.
β€’ Use an ergonomic mouse and mousepad to prevent wrist strain.
β€’ Keep frequently used items, such as pens and your stapler, close by so you don't have to stretch or turn to get them.
β€’ Use a hands-free headset if you are on the phone a lot.
β€’ Use a document stand, so you don't have to look down and strain your neck.
β€’ Your knees should be at the same height as
your hips or slightly lower.
β€’ Your forearms should be at a 90-degree angle from your upper arms. Having your keyboard too high or too low can cause elbow and
shoulder pain.
β€’ Keep your feet flat on the floor or a footrest.
β€’ Sit up straight and do not slump to one side.
