Did you know that the Q angle (quadriceps angle) plays a significant role in knee health?
- The Q angle is formed between a line representing the resultant line of force of the quadriceps, (connecting a point near the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the mid-point of the patella) and a line from the center of the patella to the center of the tibial tubercle.
- Normal Q angle for males: Approximately 10-14 degrees
Normal Q angle for females: Approximately 15-17 degrees
- This angle, which measures the alignment of the knee joint, is generally wider in females than males. A wider Q angle in females can make them more prone to knee problems, such as genu valgus (knock knees) or genu varum (bow legs). These conditions can lead to joint stress, discomfort, and even injury over time.
Q angle is wider in females than males, Why??
- In females, the pelvis is broader to accommodate childbirth, causing the femurs to angle inward more, resulting in a larger Q angle. In males, the pelvis is narrower, and the femurs typically have a straighter alignment, leading to a smaller Q angle.
How does physiotherapy help manage issues related to the Q angle and knee pain?
- Physiotherapy helps by strengthening muscles around the knee, improving alignment, and reducing pain through targeted exercises, stretching, and manual therapy. It also educates on proper movement patterns to prevent injury.
